April 16, 200521 yr Hello, I'am a newbie in baseball world and i have a simple question ? When an intentional walk must be call by the catcher ? thanks :thumbup
April 16, 200521 yr I dont understand your question? Are you asking when a manager chooses to call an intentional walk?
April 16, 200521 yr Well, if you mean the catcher has to signal to the pitcher it will be an IBB by standing up and putting his hand out, then yes. However, most if not all intentinal walks are ordered by the coaching staff in the dugout. They signal it to the catcher, who gets in position therefore signaling the pitcher.
April 16, 200521 yr I mean when usualy the dugout choose to call an intentional walk ? thanks 744705 Dugouts always call for intentional walks.
April 16, 200521 yr It depends, it could be that the manager dioesnt want to pitch toa aprticular guy at the time, b/c the next guy is a better matchup for the pitcher or the next guy isnt as good. Also an IBB can be used to put a guy on first so that if the ball si hit on the ground they can geta double play or forceout which wouldnt have been available before
April 16, 200521 yr In what situation they call this play ? 744716 Frankly, it depends. Managers will often IBB the opponents best hitters even when there is no one on base when the pitcher that is facing them doesn't fare well. However, this is only done in late inning situations. Also, if a starter is on his last batter (or a reliever for that matter) and the other reliever is ready, sometimes teams will IBB the hitter they don't want the new pitcher to face to get to the next one in the order. However, probably the most often the IBB is used is when there is a man on second or third with one out to setup a Double Play to end an inning.
