Brummer continues to "hate" on the Marlins

Recommended Posts

Hopefully, House Speaker Bense will pull the bills directly from Brummer (See bottom of the article- Bense says they're not "dead" yet).

It's frustrating because it's simple economics:

$2 million tax rebate per year is a TON better than no taxable income generated.

We're talking multiple levels here: parking $, concessions, radio, TV, etc. It goes on and on and on. There will be a far worse economic impact if the Marlins "leave."

That being said, does anybody really believe $30 million is going to be the death knell? Does anybody have any information on a plan B?

I think the 30 million will not break the deal. But I'm concerned about some of the comments from the city manager Ariola. He said (probably 3-6 months ago) that all bets are off if the state didn't approve the rebate. That was probably posturing, but who knows.

I heard that things are going OK now at the state legislature. It was mentioned on the "Descarga Deportiva" radio show in spanish (670 AM @ 6pm weekdays). No details were given, but they are getting signature from fans at the stadium yesterday and today and they are going to Tallahasee to interview the local state rep and senators.

They will take questions from the radio audience.

I hope they're right about that. I have faith that the Marlins will be able to secure a stadium deal.

On another note, I am getting sick and tired of South Florida constantly getting screwed over by those northern rednecks. They wield way too much power and we don't have enough representation up there. One would have thought that Jeb, being from South Florida, would provide a little bit more support for us in the southern part of the state. We should break away from Florida and become a new state. Call it South Florida. Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. It's an idea that should be thrown around more often.

A Shot at Brummer.. too funny. Gotta love the Orlando Sentinel.

EDITORIAL

A vision to build on

Our position: The Florida House took a sensible and fair approach in OK'ing money for arena.

State Rep. Fred Brummer may not want Orange County to derive a direct benefit from the sales taxes it generates. Fortunately, others in the House of Representatives aren't so utterly lacking vision.

A measure that would secure Orlando's ability to recoup some $60 million in sales-tax revenue generated by the Orlando Magic to refurbish the arena was approved by the full House on Wednesday -- despite Mr. Brummer's incessant grumbling.

He thinks it's a tax break for the wealthy owners of professional-sports teams. But that sort of blissful political ignorance ignores the fact that the city of Orlando owns the arena and would benefit from any improvements. It ignores the fact that every other community that hosts an eligible professional-sports team has received the tax rebate in years past. And it ignores the fact that those sales-tax dollars would otherwise be spent in other parts of the state if they weren't earmarked for Central Florida.

Perhaps that's what Mr. Brummer wants for this community: to have local tax dollars sucked into the Tallahassee vacuum for lawmakers to dispense as they so choose. Usually, that involves taking care of special-interest groups that finance political campaigns.

Certainly, that's not in the region's best interest. And quite fortunately, it's not how other responsible state leaders view their role.

With Mr. Brummer now an irrelevant sideshow in the House, the rest of Central Florida's legislative delegation should turn its attention to the Senate -- to ensure that this worthwhile bill becomes law.
