QuickGold
Yahoo! Sports Game Preview: Dontrelle Willis' brilliant start has obscured what is shaping up as a career year for Josh Beckett. The Marlins' other budding staff ace will shoot for his eighth win of the year when the Marlins wrap up a three-game interleague series with the visiting Seattle Mariners. Beckett, who spearheaded Florida's charge to the 2003 World Series title, earning MVP honors in the Fall Classic, has yet to win 10 games in any of his first four full seasons in the big leagues. The hard-throwing right-hander is well on his way beyond that figure this year as he has won seven of his first 10 decisions, including a current four-start unbeaten streak during which he has yielded three runs or fewer in each outing. Beckett did not receive a decision in Florida's 3-2 loss at Washington last Friday, yielding two runs and four hits over eight strong innings. Plagued by injuries and inconsistency in the past, Beckett finally appears poised to enjoy a full, healthy season. He has gone at least seven innings in each of his last three starts, and trails only Willis (10-2, 2.13 ERA) in wins and ERA on the Florida staff. Beckett leads the Marlins and ranks seventh in the NL with 72 strikeouts, and boasts a 5-0 record with a 1.47 ERA in six home starts this year. However, he'll have to follow Willis' lead again Thursday as the left-hander became the majors' first 10-game winner in a 5-4 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday. Willis gave up a season-high 10 hits and four earned runs in 6 2-3 innings, but was backed up Carlos Delgado's five-RBI effort. Delgado's three-run homer in the fifth gave Florida a 4-0 lead. He had an RBI double in the third and drew a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth as the Marlins won for only the third time in their last 14 games. Adrian Beltre went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Seattle, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. :marlins
