June 24, 200521 yr Because the "ace" is still on the DL according too many, too busy to be the team's stopper. :plain
June 24, 200521 yr Well, right now the ace is Dontrelle... HANDS motherf***in DOWN! :notworthy I *heart* Dontrelle.
June 24, 200521 yr i think its more about performance, than what is designated... Dontrelle had more than performed as our ace, which is what i would now call him...
June 24, 200521 yr Dontrelle is clearly the Ace, The Stopper, the All Star Starter, our Cy Young leader.
June 24, 200521 yr It's June. The only time a pitcher is vaulted ahead of another is a) at the start of the season when setting up the initial rotation, b) mid-season when someone is skipped for poor performance, and c) in the playoffs Beckett started Opening Day. Neither Beckett, Willis or Burnett have been skipped and likely will not. Who knows if we even make the playoffs, let alone be in the position to decide who starts games 1, 4 and 7 (if necc).

June 24, 200521 yr The numbers speak for themselves. Dontrelle has pitched his way into the ace role.
June 24, 200521 yr Yep. Dontrelle is a best pitcher right now. But it's a long season and we have three great arms at the top of the rotation. I understand that their closeness in age and the lack of any of the three to grab the 'ace' title from eachother (or Pavano last year) makes this an interesting topic.

June 24, 200521 yr Burnett has never been consistent. He's shown just enough talent to tease then falls back into bad habits. Beckett can't stay healthy, and he has a tendency to lose focus if he doesn't like strike calls. Willis is far and away the best pitcher on this team. He's carrying them.
June 24, 200521 yr Neither has Dontrelle. Remember fading down the stretch in 2003? Or the Jekyll/Hyde of 2004?
June 24, 200521 yr Neither has Dontrelle. Remember fading down the stretch in 2003? Or the Jekyll/Hyde of 2004? 823563 D faded in 2003 largely due to it being his first season, but he pitched well in the World Series in pressure situations. 2004 he gets a bum rap. If the bullpen hadn't kept blowing leads in his games, he'd have won 15 games. He had 11 no decisions, over a third of his starts. He's winning more this season because he's in great shape, and he's pitching deeper into games.
June 24, 200521 yr Marlins Ace. All star. All star starter. Cy Young. That is all. 823547 That's not all... Gold Glove Silver Slugger That is now all. :thumbup
June 24, 200521 yr In 2004 he didn't consistently go deep into games and did not have a scoreless outing after mid-April. Not to mention another second half disappointment.
June 24, 200521 yr You're wrong by saying a ace is changed when the playoffs begin rferry. It happens after the all star break, the best pitcher starts the first game back to make sure they get the most starts.
June 24, 200521 yr I've never heard of a manager rearranging his entire schedule before the ASG to get his ace another start. Maybe arrange it so his 4th and 5th guy are skipped or give his ace a chance to start the ASG. Nothing like the preparation that goes into setting up the Opening Day or postseason rotation.
June 24, 200521 yr I remember that huge arguement about who's our ace--Willis or Josh? I hope those people who said Josh changed their mind now....
June 24, 200521 yr Just like last year the Ace is someone who shows themselves to be the stopper. Designations don't matter. By the time one is recognized as the Ace it is only a formality. It took quite a while for Pavano to get that name after several Dontrelle-esque ressurections from 4 game losing streaks.
June 24, 200521 yr this thread is :banghead but IMO, our ace is clearly al lieter, just playing, its dontrell
June 24, 200521 yr while like i said in my 1st post im still for Willis as the 'ace', i think that if becket got deserved wins, and coculd stay off the DL, he would have a very good record and it would still be up in the air... Beckett just cant keep his fringer healthy.. lol
