June 24, 200521 yr yup! its true! Edwin Encarnacion was called up to play infield... CLEVELAND -- Edwin Encarnacion will get his first taste of the big leagues, and Austin Kearns will remain in the Minors. The Reds promoted Encarnacion, their highly touted third-base prospect, from Triple-A Louisville to replace injured outfielder Kenny Kelly on the 25-man roster before Friday's game against the Indians. Kelly had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday. Encarnacion, ranked 56th in Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects list this spring, was hitting .292 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs for the Bats. Though his bat has been steady, his play in the field was often suspect, as he committed 18 errors. Encarnacion, a 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, was originally obtained by the Reds in the 2001 trade that sent Rob Bell to the Rangers. He was recently named to the International League All-Star team and -- for the third straight year -- the World team for the Futures Game. Encarnacion will wear No. 12 for the Reds. The Reds decided not to promote Kearns, who was sent down to Louisville on June 12, the day Kelly was called up. In seven games for the Bats, Kearns, who was the Reds' Opening Day right fielder, has hit .379 with a homer and six RBIs.
