AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Out with a stress fracture in his throwing elbow, right-hander Antonio Alfonseca played catch for 10 minutes Tuesday and was encouraged. That was twice as long as Monday's session, his first since going on the disabled list April 21.

Alfonseca said he underwent an MRI on Monday and saw the results. According to the pitcher, the fracture in his elbow has healed.

"I had that crack in my elbow a couple years ago and this year it got a little bigger," he said. "It's closed now. I'm fine."

Under the most optimistic scenario, Alfonseca said he might be able to return to the bullpen by Aug. 1. He will continue playing catch for two more weeks, then throw a couple of bullpen sessions followed by live batting practice.

From there, under his plan, he would head to Jupiter for a rehab assignment.

"I know my body," he said. "I know my arm. "

Sigh. It seems like forever.

If this team doesn't get going we may be looking to move him just about the time he comes off the DL.

And I fear (same schedule) that we are anticipating too much from Valdez.

What if he comes back and is like Mota???

I know, we really need him back, but what if he's not the same old 6-fingers?

Let's just hope. We could really use the bullpen boost for the stretch run.
