July 19, 200520 yr Just got back from my 2nd trip to Richmond and while listening to a lot of Baltimore sports radio regarding the deal, three things are evident: 1) They like the deal 2) They'd rather not lose Bigbie 3) They think their ripping us off They all want us to take Ponson and Kline too because they suck and they feel like we're dumb enough to do it.
July 19, 200520 yr We're losing Lowell's contract, that's all that matters. Getting a top pitching prospect and a reliever who Wiley believes will be a good closer for us, is just a bonus.
July 19, 200520 yr But why so early? Why not wait until the trading deadline and see if we can get more? If this is just a salary dump and we're tanking this season....

Lowell has a huge contract and just dumping that salary and getting his weak bat out of the lineup is a BIG PLUS. We are not going to re-sign AJ after the season ends so we might as well get something for him now.

July 19, 200520 yr I don't think getting rid of Lowell is the answer. If anything, we need another bat, and that sure as hell ain't Bigbie.

You're right in that most of us like the deal. I don't think it's a matter of thinking the Marlins are "dumb" and I think most O's fans think it's a reasonable deal, not a ripoff for either side. Julio has frustrated us for years, alternating between dominant and awful. The emergence of rookie RHP Chris Ray has made him expendable. Most of us like Bigbie, but there are three OF prospects in the system (Fiorentino, Markakis and Majewski) who have roughly the same ceiling as Bigbie. We also have a lineup that is heavy on lefty hitters, which makes losing Bigbie less painful. As for Penn, he's highly-regarded, but not as much as Cabrera. If Cabrera is dealt, there will be rioting in the streets of Baltimore.
July 19, 200520 yr Yes, we do like the deal. Yes, we do like Bigbie but understand he's a tradeable commodity. We don't feel we're "ripping you off", as mentioned we're just pleased our front office has found away to aquire a top of the line pitcher without having to deal Cabrera or Bedard. At the same time there are many questioning whether we should be so quick to trade Penn either. Kline sucks with us, yes, but he's had a phenomenal career in the NL and we think a change of scenary to the NL will help him. Yeah, Sid does suck. True. He's a workhorse but he sucks. Please take him. Please.
