Al Gore Got His Jokes From......Carson?

Featured Replies

As vice president, Al Gore learned that the most disarming way to counter his wooden image was to tell better jokes about himself than the late-night comedians did. Mr. Gore now says he received occasional tutoring on those one-liners from the master of the television monologue, Johnny Carson.

Mr. Gore said he had telephoned Mr. Carson on several occasions in the mid-1990's to seek his guidance on "timing and delivery."

"He let me call him up and bounce jokes off him and he would give me advice on the presentation of gags," said Mr. Gore, who said he had initially approached the retired "Tonight Show" host through a mutual friend. "It was such a privilege."

Mr. Gore said that Mr. Carson, who died in January, had even given him a couple of jokes. But Mr. Carson's greatest contribution, Mr. Gore said, came in 1994, when over the telephone he walked Mr. Carson through a skit he intended to do before a black-tie Washington dinner known as the Gridiron.

The idea, Mr. Gore said, was that he would be wheeled onto the dais on a hand truck, ramrod straight, and would slowly be cranked to his feet by "two guys in Acme delivery costumes."

"I told Johnny about it, and he said, 'Oh that's great,' " Mr. Gore recalled. "He said, 'When you do it, make sure to wait till they stop laughing.' "

To his delight, Mr. Gore said, the bit killed.

"Part of the shtick on me in those days was that I was stiff," Mr. Gore added, laughing. "I like to think it's passed, but it's not."

I wonder of Johnny told him to say that he invented the internet.

I'm sure Bush told you to spread lies, too.

Sorry, just trying to come back with a smart-alecky retort.

Dont complain if you stoop to the same level back...

I wonder of Johnny told him to say that he invented the internet.

874030[/snapback]

I wonder if you happened to have any knowledge of this subject? I'd say no because he never said that.

He said it in 99 on Wolf Blitzer... "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet". Now where in that statement did he ever he invented the internet?

Now if you educated yourself, you would know that statement was very true, during his service Gore was the one responsible for the federal government getting involved in what would become the internet. During that time, he constantly gave speeches on the oncoming "information superhighway". Gore was the prime supporter in washington for the technological research that helped convert the military communications system, Apanet into what is now the internet.

Bet you didn't know that, but I guess ruining a man's name by accusing him of making a comment he never did isn't so bad?

Various republicans have attested(sp?) to that fact including Newt Gingrich. Do you want to know where the phrase "Invented the internet" came from?

Well here you go, a republican press release

That's a great source to use when you damage a man's name.

Ruining a man's name? That's a good one.

Al Gore realizes he used a poor choice of words in his statement, he has gone on Leno, Letterman, and a number of shows since his statement with the sole purpose of making fun of himself. He has used the "I invented the ______" one liner a number over times over the past years to poke fun at himself.

He had no right to claim he took the initiative in creating the internet, that is simply false in every facet.

His involvement in establishing the internet was limited at best, and even that's an exaggeration, perhaps you're the one who needs to do a little research. ARPANET, not "Apanet" completely ceased to exist in the very early 80's, Al Gore didn't even become invlved in anything intenet related until almost a decade after ARPANET shut down and the NSF sponsored the research to privatize the internet and laydown the infrastructure.

Al Gore did not "take the initiative in creating the internet" because it was already around. Go read any "History of the Internet" book written pre-1999 and you will NEVER find a mention of Gore's name in it anywhere. Read a "History of the Internet" book written post-1999 and the only mention of Gore's name in it would be at the end disproving his absurd statement because so many people asked.

Al Gore more than realizes how ridiculous his comment was, but for some reason blind liberals such as yourself fail to do so.

In case you haven't noticed Al Gore is not exactly the smartest guy in the world when it comes to addressing problems. By the time he finally addressed the matter the "liberal" media had already been obsessed with the whole thing. Gore did nothing to address it and finally came out a few weeks later poking fun at himself saying "he also invented the camcorder". At the time he addressed it, his campaign had concluded that it would be too much to try to correct the problem and tell their side, so instead decided to go along with it and painted it as a way to portray Al as a guy with a sense of humor.

Actually I have read various pieces on this. Arpanet was created in 69, the term internet came to use in 74. Al Gore didn't come on to the scene in 76. Yet you forget to mention that, many of the top experts in the field of the internet all attest to the fact that Gore did more for the internet than any elected official had.

How much had he done, Vint Cerf who as you know is known as "The Father of The Internet" constantly sings the praises of Al Gore as being the key legislator in promoting the internet. Much of Gore's early congressional work surrounded his promotion of the system and the internet, hence why many computer experts constantly sing his praises. To deny Gore's important role in turning Washington's attention to the internet, is absurd and their are many computer experts who will agree.

Al Gore never said at any point that he created what would become the internet, what he did take credit for was how much he did in Washington to turn the attention. The fact that you claim because Al Gore was 21 at the time arpanet was created totally takes him out of the picture is absurd and you know it.

Now let me ask you a question, who in 1990 introduced a bill designed to fund the creation of an "information systems highway" for education? Yeah, it was Al Gore. He campaigned vigurously(sp?) for this bill citing Arpanet as a model for what would become the internet. Washington had turned it's head on this incredible piece of technology and Al Gore was the one who made them turn attention. Which is why countless internet experts and information centers often credit Gore for his work in promoting it.

Ah yes, because we know that anyone who ever actually disagrees with the republican platform is automatically a liberal. Stop throwing the term liberal around everytime you don't like someone else's opinion. In your little world, every democrat is a liberal.

Accord, you should aspire to be as blind as liberals:

According to Vincent Cerf, a senior vice president with MCI Worldcom who's been called the Father of the Internet, "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator."

The inventor of the Mosaic Browser, Marc Andreesen, credits Gore with making his work possible. He received a federal grant through Gore's High Performance Computing Act. The University of Pennsylvania's Dave Ferber says that without Gore the Internet "would not be where it is today."

Joseph E. Traub, a computer science professor at Columbia University, claims that Gore "was perhaps the first political leader to grasp the importance of networking the country. Could we perhaps see an end to cheap shots from politicians and pundits about inventing the Internet?"

Gore never said he invented the internet. His words were a bad choice but thats not what he meant. Anyone who knows anything about the rise of the internet in the 90s knows that Gore activley sought to spread the internet into schools and other places. Thats all he meant. But if youre so eager to take words out of context, them Im sure you think Bush never stops thinking of new ways to harm our country.

I wonder of Johnny told him to say that he invented the internet.

LOL. :lol

I honestly cannot believe that this somehow has sparked a fight to defend Al Gore's statements regarding the internet. MY GOD, some of you are far more sensitive than I am and it is ridiculous! Let's throw on our robes of knowledge and start throwing aroung the word ignorant! Who gives a crap about what Al Gore really said?

:lol :lol :lol

That internet comment gets me everytime.

So does the word "lock box".

Considering Conservatives still joke about it today, it actually is a big issue. If you made a statement and then had it taken way out of context and then had your life's work degraded, I'd think you'd be a little upset.

I guess hard evidence isn't enough for some people. The fact of the matter is, the republicans made up the entire quote, so you can find it funny but don't think for a second it's actually true. Almost all the people who ridicule Gore for the statement have no idea the amazing things Gore did for the internet during his stay on Capitol Hill.

WTF, I'm just recalling old memories of MadTV skits and other stuff like that.

Did I ever mention in my post that I believed it was true?

Jeezus.

Excuse me for having a sense of humor.

I wouldn't worry though because people know by now to give Gore credit.
