International terrorists will become regular users of Google?s new project Google Earth, a source in the Russian Special Services was quoted by Newsru.com as saying.

Earth.Google.Com was launched this summer and distributes free photos made from space that have a capacity to view objects as small as two meters.

?On these pictures terrorists will see all that they need to carry out an attack in any part of the world,? the source said.

Russian military expert, Lt.-Gen. Leonid Sazhin, said that ?from now on international terrorists do not have to inspect the site of a would-be terrorist attack. An international company is doing the work for them?.

Google Earth is a standalone Windows application that?s essentially an enhanced and upgraded version of the Google Keyhole product that was produced after Google purchased Keyhole in October 2004.

The application combines local search capabilities with satellite imaging and maps from around the globe. Currently it includes detailed imagery of the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as many major cities in other countries. The medium to high resolution terrain provides a detailed view of the entire world.

Google Earth provides the option of displaying local lodging, road markers, terrain, local dining options, geographical borders and 3D buildings over the satellite image. Its ?Fly To? feature accepts an address, place name, cross street or simple Latitude/Longitude coordinates and zooms quickly in to the specified location.

A free version is available on the Google website, while advanced users can purchase its optional upgrade Google Earth Plus with GPS device support.

Yeah, it's a very powerful piece of software. Could see the danger of it falling into the wrong hands.

You are a news machine tonight, JJ.

And whatever--terrorists don't need maps. They just point and shoot.

Yeah...they sure didnt use Maps and GPS during 9/11.........

I just don't see how satellite maps are going to help terrorists. I'm having a hard time imagining a scenario. Besides, this kind of satellite imagery has been available on the web since at least 1998. The only difference is that the Google one is more fun to look at.

Not just satellite images, also 3D terrain and buildings:

Plus this lets the Average Joe access maps and the like very easily....

I'm sure terrorists have been using satellite images from websites since well before Google Earth. Terrorists are far more savvy than you think.

god damn it.

after i saw this thread, i went and downloaded google earth just to see what all the hubbub was about.

i'd like those four hours of my life back, thanks.

Again, its not only satellite imaging, also 3D Terrain and such like the picture I posted above. And I dont think you should imply what I think about terrorists from posting an internet article...

I wasn't implying you personally, but you in the general sense as in all people.

I think google earth is pretty kewl and fun to check out.

I could see how it would be of use but such images could already be gotten over the web or old fashion maps. Heck building structures most of the time are public record.
