September 25, 200520 yr South Florida is not in need of more shelters, especially not just one monster shelter. Every school that is constructed nowadays is built to be a shelter. Also, it is preferable to have shelters spread out over a large area rather than having just 1 main shelter, that makes it easier to get to the shelters because you don't have everyone trying to get to one place which causes major traffic problems. I think this idea is completely useless. You're going to have people using the tragedy of a hurricane and of an incapable local government in NO to suggest ideas like this for no other reason than to fatten their own wallets. sorry but thats a moronic response...just who is fattening their wallet? mr. loria? he's still forking out 192mil+. the state? tehy're giving up l and and paying the rest. major traffic problems?? well no sh*t, at least its located directly off the turnpike and a couple miles between the 826 and 95. so whats the problem here? what happends if there is a storm surge up to 25 feet and biscane bay floods and the miami river, or port everglades? then what. what happends if water comes up onto the banks where they store all the fuel, we have no gas. where the f*** are people going to drive? orlando? jacksonville? atlanta? not without gas their not, so instead, they could be in a gigantic domed stadium with adaquate food, shelter, facilities... this idea is a gold mine, lets just hope theey pick it up and run with it and the state isn't as ignorant as you. Aperez, you're an ignorant slut. :mischief Apezez you must not live down here in south florida. Because there is indeed a new for more shelters. And the "safe schools" are not as well built as you think.
September 25, 200520 yr Dade and Browards Counties are seeing these huge low-lying towers being built. They need shelters. The area also needs a ballpark. This plan aims to kill two birds with one stone. Here in Fort Myers they have added a bunch of Red Cross-approved shelters to meet state requirements for shelters. They also redid the evacuation plans, bought new fire engines, and arranged for helipad locations in Downtown Fort Myers just so the state would permit high-rise development along the Caloosahatchee.
September 25, 200520 yr I'm not at all claiming the Loria is fattening his own wallet, I completely understand his financial complications (as much as an outsider can). I was reffering more to the community leaders who would probably spearhead this project and have it become like the PAC where those in charge of construction are giving all the jobs to thier contractor friends. In terms of logistics, getting everyone to 1 shelter is very difficult. Especially one in Weston?!? If you're saying that Downton miami needs more shelters to handle all the new residents (which btw, most of those new condo sales are 2nd or 3rd homes if not just investments) then by all means, lets build them nearby downton Miami. Which, btw, if there is a huge increase they will build more school, which means more shelters.. I'm not saying I wouldn't love the idea of a new stadium. But I think some of you are looking thru some pretty thick Marlins goggles and not seeing that if public officials get their hands on this too much, its going to be a very long and expensive process. My favorite thing about the way Loria and the Marlins have been handling this is that they want to control all the construction which means no corruption and no years of delays (again, like the PAC)
September 26, 200520 yr We need to learn to read. The Mayor and City Manager of Weston proposed this idea for a ballpark near Dolphins Stadium. All of Downtown Miami is a flood zone. This shelter would help serve the first-responders as well as evacuees. After Charley, National Guard and Red Cross workers were housed at the Lee Civic Center in North Fort Myers. It helped that they had a central base of command and a place to bring in supplies to be trucked into the worst hit areas. Of course when Cape Coral Hospital lost part of the roof they were able to set up triage in a remote area in the Civic Center to keep people from going to the damaged facility. They needed the room for the most critical patients.
September 26, 200520 yr I can not believe you guys are still going on about this idea. I did state earlier in one of my replies that it is not a bad idea but that was it... just an idea. I really hope the Marlins do get their stadium. I just don't want the notion that its going to be a stadium/shelter because in reality... please ask your self this question and be very honest with your self. Would you really want to go to this alleged shelter along with up to 40000 people? I'm not going to sugar coat this but I ask this question because many of my upper class friends who live in Weston/Bonaventure had advised me that they would never consider going to such a shelter. (Its an ego and money thing) There are also folks who live in Golden beach, Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour, and Aventura that would not even consider of going to such a place. I did not include other cities since this was just a question I asked my friends who live in these coastal areas. You think that they would benefit from a project like this but instead they would prefer to stay at either a friend or relatives home up north if they had to. I believe that "Aperez" does bring up some good points about having the Marlins control the construction of their ballpark. The schools in Dade county are up to Hurricane codes for Cat 5 and I know in Ft.Lauderdale their are shelters specifically designed for a Cat 5. I have no knowledge of what the Broward schools Hurricane strengths are. Dade County along with Broward has many staging areas for Search and rescue missions as well as supply stations. I also have another question... is the Panthers arena (Bankatlantic center) and AAA designed for cat 5? If you say no...please include the source and not just hear say.
September 26, 200520 yr I think the reason people are still on this is because it seems to at least be gaining some supporters in terms of more newspapers discussing the idea, but this won't even happen I imagine. BTW, I'll find out about codes for AAA since I worked for the engineering firm who did a lot of the electrical engineering for it, but I would imagine it is up to code, but doubt they would want people to go there since its literally right on the water..

No base flood elevation or (BFE). No flood insurance required for this area. "Aperez" thanks for looking into that. Its just for knowledge on this shelter/stadium debate. For some reason these people keep forgetting that Wayne owns that property next to Dolphins stadium
September 26, 200520 yr Yeah AAA is an AE5 flood zone but I got news for you Dolphins stadium is an AE7 flood zone. Both of these stadiums require the mandatory flood insurance.

In a Category 5 storm, the surge would not require evacuations of the Dolphins Stadium area. Downtown would have to be cleared.
September 26, 200520 yr that's a dumb thing to say. Miami has the potential to be this countries most important city after new york withing the next 20 years. It is truly an international city. The amount of money from Europe and Latin America flowing through the financial district in Miami is incridebly large and still increasing. Just check out all the construction going on down there. It is in Florida's best interest to preserve miami and it's residents. All they care about is green. In this case that is a good thing Face it - the crackers in Tally could care less if we get blown off the face of the earth. It will not happen near Dolphins stadium. Wayne owns that land. He is not going to give it away for a Marlins stadium charity cause. No matter how it is spinned as a hurricane shelter. Believe me if the town fathers decided that a multi-use sports stadium/evacuation center were a good idea Wayne would be outfront touting PPS at the logical site. Can't you just hear him saying "just put a roof on Dolphins Stadium for me...". The state would hopefully rather build a new stadium to make ALL accomodations available. They can always use emminent domain. that would be sweet if wayne had to sell his land with out wanting to
September 27, 200520 yr I'm from Boston, so I don't know the Miami area very well, especially where the various counties are in relation to each other, but...the one potentially bad scenerio that I thought of was that the Dolphins make a pitch to the city saying that the new roof they might be planning to put on Dolphins Stadium would be able to withstand the Cat. 5 storms. Should Dolphins Stadium be in the right area, and the city dosent need to finance the construction of a brand new stadium, the Marlins bid for a shelter/stadium would fade away.

I don't give a rat's a** that your "upper class" friends won't seek shelter there - we're trying to protect the vulnerable, not the damn rich.

Read the mayor of Westons letter again please. He is talking in general. Everyone will be vulnerable to a Cat 5 Hurricane including the damn rich! I was just making a point earlier (if you would not take it so personal) that there are those that would not use this shelter and they are in the most of "vulnerable areas" for storm surges and need for emergency evacuation. Me personally, I would not wait around for local, state, or federal government to take control of my own personal safety.
