September 27, 200521 yr Burnett asked to leave Marlins Burnett asked to leave Marlins By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins all but cut the cord with A.J. Burnett when they sent the right-handed pitcher home before Monday night's game at Dolphins Stadium. He will not start the rest of the season, and the club will not offer him a long-term contract. The move came one day after Burnett made critical remarks about the organization following his start in Atlanta. "I haven't seen a positive pat on the back since April," said Burnett on Sunday. "Guys are out here busting their [butts]. The whole team is out here busting their [butts]. We ain't trying to lose. We ain't out there trying to strike out or give up runs. Guys are busting their [butts]. Yet you still hear negativity. Just negativity. I ain't saying no names. Just too much negativity." "Before the start of Monday's game, Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett was told he would not start again this season for Florida and was asked to leave the team," said general manager Admin Beinfest. "He was not suspended and will receive pay." Beinfest added that Burnett will not be offered a multiyear contract following the season, when he becomes a free agent. He went 12-12 with a 3.44 ERA this season, and recorded 198 strikeouts. In seven Major League seasons, all with the Marlins, he compiled a 49-50 record and 3.73 ERA.

September 27, 200521 yr Great to see the FO is letting the people that stuck around to watch him pitch for six years say goodbye.
September 27, 200521 yr Great to see the FO is letting the people that stuck around to watch him pitch for six years say goodbye. Juanky, you and I are almost always on the same page but on this one I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. By disposing of AJ this way I believe the FO did exactly the right thing and had they done less, (knowing you disagree) I would have been disappointed.
September 27, 200521 yr I can't believe Burnett's behavior, hopefully he enjoys playing in NY or Bal, and has a career ending injury. In spanish you call someone like him , malcriado. Screw you AJ.
September 27, 200521 yr I just don't see the point, 03. FO wants to fine him, great. FO wants to not resign him, theirr money to spend. But there are those of us here who have been around a lot longer than this administration, and if they quite honestly gave a crap about us they'd at least give us the chance to say goodbye. Losing teams as they might have been, those players meant a lot to me. I didn't get a chance to say bye to Brad Penny, Derrek Lee, Mark Kotsay, or many of the others for that matter. Can I at least get a chance to say goodbye to my favorite player since the teal hats? It's really not a big thing to ask for. Just give us a chance to say goodbye. He sure means a lot more to me than the silly old man on a power trip sitting on the bench.

Thats the lamest thing i've ever heard. Burnett is being childish and does not deserve to start again in a marlins uniform. Not even to make u feel better...

Not even to make u feel better...Oh, I'm so sorry if this team means a little bit more to me than just a boxscore reading. I grew up with that dark ages team, spent all of my high school years with it, and it meant a lot to me. The name Marlins is more than a baseball team to me - it's a really big part of life. If that's not the case for you, that's fine. But something tells me that on a marlins message board more people will be like me than like you. And if you don't care, fine. But I want to say bye to the guy. I want to be able to stand and clap when he walks off the mound for the final time in JRS. Is that so much to ask for? No, it isn't. And seriously, if you don't like it, then f*** off. I didn't ask your opinion on whether or not I wanted to say goodbye, I was asking why people like me couldn't say goodbye. Is it my fault you only saw him pitch 30 or so times because the only #43 you know is Juan Encarnacion? No. Go piss off somebody else.

Look, you may not like AJ, but what he has done to this franchise is undeniable. Look at the career leader board for pitching stats, and AJ's name is at the top of just about every category. Miami just has bad fans, so something like 'saying goodbye' may be a foreign concept, but look at the New York teams this week. Bernie Williams' every move was cheered in the Bronx this weekend since it was the last home-stand, fans where chanting his name even when he was on the bench. At Shea, Mike Piazza was cheered mercilessly since fans of both teams knew this was likely the last time they'd see either of those players in the home-white uniforms. Just because most Miami fans are too clueless to know that this is a typical custom when the 'writing is on the wall' that the player isnn't coming back doesn't mean it is unacceptable.

I'm going to miss seeing the big bad*ss #34 on the mound for the Fish. I don't have a huge problem with what he said.
September 27, 200521 yr I've been a big AJ fan from before day 1. But I agree with the decision by the front office. If he stayed on the team from this point on the only thing to look forward to would be seeing the entire team, led by McKeon, Conine, and Dontrell......pie him. . .

AJ basically said on SUnday he wants nothing to do with this organization and that he cannot wait until he gets away from it. Now how can the Front Office sit there and allow the guy to wear a Marlins uniform after saying that. AJ did this to himself. He is the one who pitched so bad the past few weeks probably costing him a few million. He is the one who can never keep his mouth shut over anything. It was the common sense decision. Obviously AJ didn't care if he had more start or not either.
