Posted October 1, 200519 yr Marlins' youths show promise By Joe Capozzi Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Saturday, October 01, 2005 MIAMI GARDENS ? For a team that will miss the playoffs, the Marlins' future looked bright Friday night. With contributions from rookies who will compete for starting jobs next spring, Florida snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win against Atlanta. Braves manager Bobby Cox, with the NL East already clinched, took out most of his regulars, including Andruw Jones and Chipper Jones, early in the game. But the Marlins (81-79) will take it just the same because it guarantees they will not finish with a losing record for third straight season, a franchise first. Friday's win means none of the five NL East teams will have losing records. "I like the way the young guys played,'' manager Jack McKeon said. "We were able to weather the storm tonight with good pitching. Plus Bobby took all his guys out of the lineup, especially the Jones boys.'' Right-hander Josh Johnson, in his first career start, made a strong impression on a Marlins staff that will watch him compete for a starting job next spring. Johnson struck out seven and allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings. He also had a single and scored a run. "I like him, man. He knows how to pitch,'' Cox said of Johnson. "Maybe they've got a replacement for A.J. (Burnett)'' Catcher Matt Treanor had an RBI single, and right fielder Jeremy Hermida went 1-for-3 with an RBI. He also walked and scored in the eighth inning on Lenny Harris' fifth career pinch-hit home run. "You take these last games, and it's the last thing you remember coming into spring training so it's always good to end on a positive note,'' Hermida said. Gonzalez surgery: Shortstop Alex Gonzalez had arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips in his right elbow Thursday and is expected to make a full recovery. Gonzalez will wear a sling to hold his arm in place and will resume baseball activity in six weeks. Gonzalez will be a free agent after the season and might not return to Florida if the Marlins don't offer him a mutliyear contract. Ozzie and Miguel: White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, a former Marlins coach, said he called third baseman Miguel Cabrera last week after Cabrera was benched for showing up late Sunday. Guillen and Cabrera are from Venezuela. When Cabrera told Guillen he'd been disciplined, Guillen responded: "Good! What were you thinking? Are you stupid?" Despite Guillen's threats to retire if the White Sox win the World Series, he is expected to return next year to Chicago. Sources in Chicago say he is not interested in managing the Marlins if manager Jack McKeon steps down. Noteworthy: Hitting coach Bill Robinson coached first base because Perry Hill had to leave for a family emergency. ... Before Friday's game, a local priest gave McKeon a framed photo of the Pope that was blessed by the Pope. "I told him. 'We could have used his help a couple of weeks ago.' " Link It's nice to see Ozzie continue to mentor Cabrera. Too bad if he isn't interested in a job down here.
October 1, 200519 yr Let's up these lay to rest all the Ozzie talk around here. Though, we all know what players and managers say are never set in stone.

Maybe that's why he hasn't been able to hit for 3 months now. And I know that's not why we have him and I still think he's a solid backup C...just sayin'
October 1, 200519 yr Mentor? Do we even know how Miguel took it?!? Sure, the message is common sense, but not people only injest certain messages from certain people at certain times under certain situations.
