August 17, 200323 yr African American. Why are blacks called African American? Can I be called British-American? Or would that imply that I am an immigrant who used to live in Great Britain. Most blacks in this country have never set foot in Africa, yet they are called African American because calling them "black" is racist. Yet, we can call umm European Americans "white". People also say "well they aren't really black." Ok, they are brown. I'm not white. I'm pink or tan. I just think that this P.C. crap has gone too far. I mean do most people in this country even know what NAACP stands for? National Association for the Advcancement of COLORED people. Why is calling someone with dark-skin "black" so wrong? We call people with blonde hair "blondes". It's easier, and not racist at all. It seems like nowadays if you are to talk about things involving race, then you have to be careful to be politically correct, or else you be labeled a racist.
August 17, 200323 yr did you call me white? damn it....I hate that term, I prefer one of those much easier PC terms..... No. The political correctness crap has gone too far. It has gone too far for years now. If I want to call someone black, I should, does that mean I keep my white sheet in the closet? No. Does that mean I have this secret desire to eradicate this country of blacks? No. Or say I call a Hispanic a Mexican...well in South Texas the vast majority have a Mexican heritage. Does that mean I want to string them all up and be done with them? No. Does that mean I am looking for a totally pure (white) America? No. That would be simply stupid. And it can be applied to any ethnic group. Political Correctness is essentially a bunch of crap. If I want to hate a person, I am not going to hate them because of the color of their skin. It will be because well I simply dont like that damn person because of who they are.
August 17, 200323 yr Author If I want to hate a person, I am not going to hate them because of the color of their skin. It will be because well I simply dont like that damn person because of who they are. Amen.
August 17, 200323 yr Reminds me of an older King of the Hill episode, right after Kahn (i think the name is spelt right) moves in. Hank is like....I dont hate the man cause he is oriental, or whatever he said....i hate the man cause i dont like him.
August 17, 200323 yr Author lol. Exactly. And, it seems you cant even joke around with people anymore, or else you risk being labeled a bigot. I have black friends who always joke around about their skin, and white people too. But joke around about that stuff in public, and all hell breaks loose. You might as well shave your head bald and salute Hitler.
August 17, 200323 yr They ain't called colored anymore? African-American doesn't apply if they aren't immigrants.
August 17, 200323 yr Author exactly Cape. How do you distinguish between someone who is from Ethiopia, and someone who's born in Charleston, SC who is black? One is black, one is African-American. Also, what if I know a white guy from South Africa? He's African American. being P.C. aint easy
August 17, 200323 yr I had a friend, her name was Merilda and she was born and raised in South Africa but her ancestry was Dutch. Her ethnicity was Afrikaaner. She was just Merilda from South Africa.
August 17, 200323 yr Author She would be African American. Michael Vick: black. I dont request to be called Caucasian...I'm white.
August 17, 200323 yr Furman, Nobody would call her African-American. She would be an Afrikaaner. That is the PC/Ethnic name.
August 17, 200323 yr Author i know. I'm just saying, if you are gonna call anyone African American, it would be someone like that. Not someone who was born in Atlanta, raised in Atlanta, and never left the state of Georgia.
August 18, 200323 yr While I agree that political correctness sucks big time, just a word of warning to Das. Don't call a hispanic that isn't mexican a mexican. The same as you wouldn't call a hispanic who isn't cuban a cuban. We don't care about the political correctness, but at least get the country right.
August 18, 200323 yr like i said.... in south texas.... the hispanics are from mexico. i am fully aware of what things are like in florida.
Thats why you have to say Latins if your not sure. Also you know what I also hate that people born in the U.S. are the only ones that could be called "Americans" what about the people from S.American, C.America, Canadians, Mexicans, etc. What about them?
August 18, 200323 yr well it has become generally accepted that citizens from teh united states are known as americans..... while people from canada are canadians people from mexico...mexicans people from argentina...argentines etc.
August 18, 200323 yr my actual stance on this is that we are all americans. if you are not considered an ameican then you should not be here, ujless here as a legal visitor. now when i say americans i mean citizens of this country. that is first and foremost. truth be told i hate all these damn stupid labels. just call people Americans and be done with it. But alas people are not that intelligent or mature enough to do this. perhaps one day we will see this occur, however i am not holding my breath unfortunately. its unfortunate but a part of our life.
August 18, 200323 yr Author labels should only be used in description. -"Hey you see that guy in the crowd there?" -"Which one?" -"The hispanic guy with the fuscia hair" or "the white guy with the periwinkle dreadlocks" etc. Skin color should be like hair color, eye color, etc. But, I do think that being color-blind is not all its cracked up to be. Bill Maher (who is extremely liberal, and i really don't agree with much he says, but he is funny) said "it's great to be color-blind, but in the end, you're still just blind." This has more to do with racial profiling (like at airports). But that's another chapter. Back to the topic in hand. I'm not gonna waste my breath when describing someone and say "African-American". I'm gonna say "black." If you don't like it, grow some thicker skin!
