November 30, 200520 yr Miguel Cabrera beat Eliezer Alfonzo in the finals to win Venezuela's home run derby yesterday. Luis Jimenez and Robert Perez were the other semi-finalists. Alfonzo, who was recently added to the Giants' 40-man roster, was the leader after one round with six homers. Cabrera won the second round and a tiebreaker in the finals.
November 30, 200520 yr Good job man, this accomplishment ranks up there with sneaking into the special olympics to compete. Beat those career minor leaguers and non-prospects. Why no Abreu?
November 30, 200520 yr Great Job Miggy! Actually there is alot of talent in Venezuela I am almost certain that his competition was better than Ivan Rodriguez, Jason Bay, Carlos Lee Even though Pudge did turn up the gear in the later rounds.

December 1, 200520 yr So I guess this means he decided to play winter ball. That's not a good move, IMO. He didn't do as well in August and September... I think he was tired. He should stop playing winter ball and just work out instead.
December 1, 200520 yr Congrats Miguel! This may not be the only HR derby he ever wins in his career...... :thumbup

December 1, 200520 yr Miguel WILL play in the MLB Home Run Derby this year... I completely agree. With Delgado gone, Encarnacion leaving and Lowell thrown away, he'll be our biggest power threat. I can almost guarantee 35+ HR

I agree he shouldn't be playing winter ball in Venezuela. I would hate to read about him getting injured down there. Another interesting aspect of this is that I seem to recall reading a report in the Palm Beach Post toward the end of the season that the Marlins told Miggy they didn't want him playing winter ball in Venezuela this year.

They didn't want him playing last year, either, but he still did.
