December 1, 200520 yr For some reason I don't have the same feeling that I did during the 98-00 seasons. I just think that we are going to be better than those teams. Then again I dont think we could be any worse, right? Maybe its because we got alot of MLB ready talent in these trades and we are going to see dividends right away. My point is that I am obviously dissappointed that the team has to go in this direction but I am excited at the possibilty that we may come out looking like genius' for it in the long run. If I were Beinfest, which I am glad I am not at this point, I would look at signing Jones to a more than fair offer. Sign some other Bullpen help. Look at trades for Pierre and sign a decent cheap left fielder, then call it a successful offseason. What does everyone else think?
December 1, 200520 yr It's probably most appropriate to compare 06 to opening day 99, since Shef, CJ, & Bobby Bo weren't moved until mid 1998. Comparison, with my totally arbitrary + and - scores: 1B Lee/Jacobs - push, Lee didn't hit as a rookie 2B Castle/Castle 3B Orie/Cabrera - Clear +4 SS Gonzo/Hammy - push, both rookies, AG all-star by default C Red/Paulie - Paulie by a nose +2 LF PDub/Conine - PDub by an eyelash -2 CF Dunwoody/Pierre - Clear +3 RF Kotsay/Hermida - Kotsay by a hair -1 SP FatAlex/Willis - Clear +4 So, with today's team, 2006 wins by +10. If we move Castle, Paulie, and/or JP, it could tip closer to even. I can't recall the 1999 rotation, but I can't imagine it being better on potential than JJ, JV, SO, & #5TBA. 2006 +2 1999's pen is probably better, only because of Mantei's dominance. -2
December 1, 200520 yr I'm not sure I agree with the specific numbers you gave out, but I do think this team, on paper, is about 10 games better than the 1999 team. I think Jacobs can do better than Lee, 2006 Castillo is better than the 1998 Castillo, and I'd say Hermida has the chance to be better than Kotsay was in 1999.

January 30, 200620 yr Totally subjective update: 1B Lee/Jacobs - push, Lee didn't hit as a rookie 2B Castle/Pokey - Luis -2 3B Orie/Cabrera - Clear +4 SS Gonzo/Hammy - push, both rookies, AG all-star by default C Red/JWillOlivo - push LF PDub/JWill or ?? - PDub -2 CF Dunwoody/Aguila - push RF Kotsay/Hermida - Jeremy for power +1 SP FatAlex/Willis - Clear +4 SP Meadows/Vargas - Clear +1 SP Others - +2 RP - push CL - Mantei/JBoro - Matt -2 It still looks like 2006 will beat out 1999 by about 6 games - look for 70 wins from the 06 Lins.
