Blue Jays Set To Announce Burnett Signing

Dallas, TX -- The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to announce the signing of pitcher A.J. Burnett at an afternoon press conference on Tuesday, the second day of baseball's Winter Meetings.

The team held a morning press conference as well, but it was to announce that general manager J.P. Ricciardi had signed a three-year contract extension. They then announced a second press conference to be held at 5:30 p.m. (et) in Dallas' Wyndham Anatole Hotel, which is hosting the Winter Meetings.

Burnett, whose destination was the subject of much speculation on Monday, would be the second significant addition to the Toronto pitching staff in nine days after the Blue Jays signed B.J. Ryan last week to a five-year, $47 million deal, the largest ever for a closer.

A 6-foot-5 righthander who will turn 29 just after the New Year, Burnett would also become sixth player from the Marlins' 2005 roster to find a new team in the last two weeks, following Carlos Delgado, Luis Castillo, Mike Lowell, Josh Beckett and Paul Lo Duca out of South Florida.

The St. Louis Cardinals were also interested in Burnett, but reportedly offered only a four-year contract.

Although he has a career losing record of 49-50 and a history of injuries, Burnett started 32 games for the Marlins last season, a career-high and the first time he started more than 20 games since 2002.

Burnett also posted four complete games and two shutouts in 2005, but he did little to shake his reputation as a late-season dud when he lost his last six decisions to finish with a .500 record.

For his career, Burnett has a 3.73 earned run average and 753 strikeouts in 134 games, all with the Marlins. He collected 198 strikeouts and had a 3.44 ERA last season.

On Monday, the Blue Jays traded righthander Chad Gaudin to the Oakland A's for a player to be named later.

Was Juan Encarnacion traded or let go? He's not on the Marlins roster anymore!!!

Free agent.

Burnett is 6'5"? Wasnt he 6'3" when he was a Marlin :eyebrow

Exchange rate differences. Ours is worth more, so 6'3" here is worth 6'5" there. :lol

Didn't now.

So the only Marlins left are: Cabrera, Willis, Treanor, Velone, Willingham, Niner.

AJ 3.80 ERA on the road in 2005. 4.17 ERA on the road the past three seasons. AL East ERA should be close to 5.00.....$55MM...bahahaha!

2005 the Jays averaged 2,000 more fans per game than the Marlins with just three less victories. Yea, enjoy AJ! You ran to the biggest $$...yet you have the nerve to point the finger at fans who didn;t want to spend their money to come see you.

Good riddance. Just wish we took the Chi Sox trade when we had the opportunity.

as someone pointed out to me last month, it's not clear the Chi Sox ever had a deal on the table.

I don't know what you mean....Players on the roster prior to September callups, or what? Because Vargas, Johnson, Messenger, Hermida, etc...were also on the roster.

Yeah, and Vargas wasn't even a September callup. I think he was called up around the AS break, no?
