According to NBC Sports, there is a deal in the works involving the Red Sox trading starter Matt Clement to the Mariners for center fielder Jeremy Reed. The trigger is most likely to be pulled if the Sox believe that they will be unable to resign Johnny Damon.

 

Seems like a lot to give up for a center fielder. Reed has a lot of potential, but the Red Sox need their starting pitching intact if they want to win the division this season.

I can't understand why the Mariners would do that deal. They need a lot more than Clement to hang with the Angels and A's.

I would imagine that its because they don't really need Matt Clement at this point, since they got Beckett and they may get the Rocket.

Assuming Boston wants him to be a leadoff guy, he doesn't strike me as a great one with only a .322 OBP. If Boston doesn't want him at leadoff, then I see him batting 9th.

reed has played 1 year in the majors. expect that obp to increase this year.
