Bradcore
I'm in the market for a really cheap laptop to run MS Works and that's about it. I don't need it to do anything else. I wanted to know your opinions on this. Laptop Description Used Description First of all, can I make MS Works with an apple? I imagine there must be a way. Also, where I'd just be using this for word processing, do you think this would be a good for me?
CapeFish
Virtual Windows, but it runs slower than hell. Can you run AppleWorks 6 instead? My copy of AppleWorks 5 can write and read Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and MSWorks files from Windows PCs. For Mac OS X: http://www.apple.com/macosx/applications/virtualpc/ There are Mac OS Classic products too. I have an original blueberry 300MHz iBook with Mac OS 8.6 and I never ran Windows on it, but some iMacs we had at school at that time did and it was kinda slow. Get lots of memory. BullDurham
Yeah, the only way I'll run VirtualPC on my iBook (with 768 MB RAM and 1.2 GHz G4 chip) is if I run Win2K on it. I've heard XP is the resource hog, while Win2K should be fine. Pitt provides free software to its students, but of course, they don't have any more 2K CDs, only XP CDs. As far as I know, there is no MS Works for Apple, but rather AppleWorks. EDIT: And if you need an office suite for the Mac but don't want to spend too much, consider OpenOffice.org2 at http://www.openoffice.org/. Be warned that it may take a while to load b/c it has to open in the X11 platform.
Bradcore
Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm just kinda browsing right now. I'm an aspiring writer, but damnit, after spending 10 hours a day in front of a computer at work, I don't want to come home and sit in front of one. I figure if I had a cheap laptop I could write on, I could just relax on my bed or couch and write. If you guys have any recommendations, lemme know. Find a cheap Mac laptop with AppleWorks or Word and you should be more than fine. A PowerBook or iBook should be fine, just post it up here first and us Apple folk will tell you how to handle it. My iBook from 1999 may only have 300MHz and 30MB of RAM, but it is wireless via one of the first Airport cards and is still functional for Internet browsing, word processing, e-mail, and playing the included Bugdom and Nanosaur. Ones I found on eBay that aren't too bad: http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iBook-G3-Noteboo...bayphotohosting http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iBook-G3_W0QQite...1QQcmdZViewItem

All though keep in mind, I'll take either Apple or PC. But I would like to be able to transfer files between the two, which is why I was wondering if macs could run Works. So I'm keeping all options open. Although the price of the one you posted stays low (hahha, right), I might get the shearly on principal. CapeFish
You can use the Rich Text File format and easily transfer files. Appleworks can read and write Word files though. You could also score a cheap, older version of MS Office for Mac and be setup.

JonDigital
If your not looking for a power machine then you cant really go wrong with one of the cheap dells that are always on sale. Granted there customer service has gone down hill since the late 90's but the machines are quality. I've been using one of there business Latitude machines for a month or so now and i love it. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/f...s=19&l=en&s=dhs Take a look at those. Admin
I always buy my laptops from Dell and have no reasons to not continue doing so.
Bradcore
Dells always have some issues with me. The disc drive stops working. It gets retarded lag. It minimizes everything constantly. They flip out on me. I don't what it is, but I only ever have problems with Dell, so I stay away from them.
