we win 24-7. Former Gator (transfer) Brian Stone had 2 TD catches.

Offense struggled a bit. Defense looked solid.

Next week: Death Valley...Clemson will go down!

Congrats, Too bad for me Auburn is all talk and no walk :banghead

yah...i saw in the Florida Today a few days ago that FIU and FAU are planning on going d-1A sometime around 2006 or 7.

Yep, Strock is hellbent on I-A:

With NCAA realignment on the horizon, Mello would like to have FIU Division I-A eligible as quickly as possible.

Strock has even dreamed up a scenario in which FIU could wind up joining Conference USA or the Mid-America Conference, which currently houses South Florida and Central Florida, respectively.

Even if FIU isn't ready by the end of this season, Mello says, the window of opportunity for the Golden Panthers to make the jump to I-A will always be open.

''For starters, we're in Miami,'' he said. ``We're in a market where there are more potential college football players than anywhere else -- and because of that we'll always be on the radar screen.''

To draw more fans this season, FIU will hand the first 5,000 fans at each game a free Papa John's pizza.

And fans bold enough to battle the heat and some stares can buy tickets that will allow them to lounge in a small pool or hot tub in the northwest corner of the stadium.

''We had those hot tubs when I was coaching the Hooters,'' Strock said of his Arena Football coaching venture. ``The fans loved it.''

Mello says he knows a bigger stadium would help, and FIU is ''in serious discussions'' about building one that could seat between 25,000 to 30,000. Players, he says, already are asking when FIU is going to schedule Nebraska and Clemson.

''Obviously, [the stadium]is a very important piece to the I-A puzzle,'' Mello says. ``Thing is we just don't know when.''

Strock is not willing to wait forever. He's the first to say he doesn't want to be playing a Division I-AA football schedule come 2005.

That's why his radio show, unlike Miami's Admin Coker, is year-round. That's why he tells recruits FIU won't back down from tough opponents. That's why he wears the hat of salesman.

''It's important to be in that spotlight,'' Strock says. ``A friend of mine told me coming in, this wasn't going to be just about coaching. And he's right. It's about putting fires out, making sure the players are going to class and maintaining their grades. The good thing about this year is that we aren't starting from scratch.''

Hot tub idea sounds familiar doesn't it?

Furman, did you get some action in the game? Where exactly is Furman college anyways? I havent heard of it..

I am not on the 90 man roster...I wont dress out till Sept. 20 against Richmond.

Furman University is a d-1aa team in the best conference in d-1aa (Southern Conference...along with Georgia Southern and Appalachian State). It's located in Greenville, SC.

Our biggest rival is probably Ga Southern. They beat us last year. 2 season ago, we beat them in the Semifinals, and proceeded to lose by 7 (I think) to Montana in the National Championship game.

I really don't know why people know Georgia Southern and Appalachian State and not Furman. Furman has the most wins of all time in the Southern Conference...and all 3 teams are usually about equal. This season, Furman is consensus #2 in our conference. Ahead of Appy State, behind Ga Southern. We get App State at home (I'll dress out for that), and must go to Statesboro to play Ga Southern.

Next week we play Clemson. Bobby Johnson, the head coach at Vanderbilt is the former head coach at Furman (was there 2 season ago when we were national runnerups).

We play the Richmond Spiders this weekend. This should be the first game I dress out for.

It's always big when a SoCon team plays against the A-10. Comparatively, it is much like an SEC team playing a Big East team.

The Southern Conference is a much better conference than the Atlantic 10, but there are some bothersome teams (Delaware, Villanova). Hopefully we can steamroll through the Spiders of Richmond. Game time: 7 pm.

you will dress, but will you play?

  • Author

naw its aight. Im a redshirt freshman. There are only a handful of redhsirt freshman that get PT. Heck, there are 3rd year sophomores that arent getting PT. I'm not too worried. Right now, I'm just excited to be dressing out. PT will come eventually. I got 3 more seasons.

Furman vs. Gardner-Webb 2:00 pm Saturday at Paladin Stadium.

Gardner-Webb is calling it their biggest game in the history of their football program.

A friend of mine is a DB for Gardner-Webb

  • Author

u know his # or if he starts?

Gardner-Webb has only been d-1aa for a few years now (4 maybe?), and they went 9-1 last season in their weak conference. They beat UT-Chatanooga last week, and really think they can play with us. We'll find out.

No idea. His name is Ben Gentry though.
