January 9, 200620 yr 1. HanRam 2. Willy 3. Hermida 4. Cabrera 5. Jacobs 6. Wily Mo 7. Olivo 8. Reese That lineup isn't bad at all, especially if Olivo and Reese have come back type years. The problem would be that HanRam might not be MLB ready, let alone ready to bat leadoff. I think that lineup is awful. 1, 6, 7, and 8 would all have around .300 or sub .300 OBP. Pena would hit some bombs, but who cares when you are producing that many outs. Also, they'd have to give up a good pitcher for Pena just because scout's like his power. I'm not willing to do that. They need an OF badly, but I don't know if it's Pena, or now arbitration eligible, Kearns. Awful? How would you make it better? It's not awful. Pena is very young and hasn't gotten consistent major league at bats. He's got 51 bombs and 131 RBI in 830 career at-bats... that averages out to 38 homeruns and 98 RBI over a full season (620 AB's). Sure, those numbers are inflated because of his home ballpark, but he's also going to progress... so we'd be talking about someone hitting 25-30 boms and driving in 80-95 RBI in the sixth spot in the lineup. That's pretty damn good. Our 7 and 8 spots in the lineup are basically a given and they won't be any worse than last year. I will grant you that HanRam as a leadoff man isn't ideal, especially since he doesn't seem Major League ready. I think our 2-6 would be young, talented, and ready to produce big-time in the big leagues. If you think you have any better suggestions, go ahead and make them.

There is a reason he hasn't gotten consistent AB. He has horrible plate discipline, he would challenge the single season K mark in 620 AB, and unlike Dunn who walks 100 times a year, Pena might walk 30 times? He's not a good baseball player. The power is nice, but a .303 lifetime OBP. That is pathetic. He is also arbitration eligible, so he doesn't fit into the Marlins plans of getting younger AND cheaper. I'm not insulting you, don't be so defensive. I just think it's a bad idea. As for the Marlins getting better, unless they are going to get a surefire leadoff hitter that is young and can play 2B or CF for years, they shouldn't make any moves. They should see if Willingham fits into their longterm plans at C or LF, and then see what holes are in the field next offseason. I don't think they need to trade for a corner player, unless he's absolutely amazing.

He's just very young. But he's got good raw talent. He just needs more AB's to develop that plate discipline. We've been spoiled by having two amazing impact players under age 24, but that is the exception and not the rule.

He hasn't gotten at bats because Casey, Kearns, Dunn, and Griffey are all better ballplayers when healthy. But he'll have his shot this year. He has a long history, going back to 1999, of never having plate discipline. Pena's minor league career he hit .251, and walked only 74 times in 951 AB. That isn't good, and there is no upgrade trend of improvement in those numbers at any level. All he is, is a young free swinging slugger approaching arbitration and will get more money then he deserves because he hits dingers. I don't think he is a good baseball player, or a good fit for the current Marlins.
