Marlins coaching changes around the organization

Featured Replies

With a new coaching crew coming on board for the Florida Marlins next year, the Marlins old staff is heading for new assignments including former Jupiter Hammerheads manager Luis Dorante.

Last year, Dorante was promoted to the Marlins as their bullpen coach after five years with the Hammerheads. Dorante was replaced by Tim Cossins, who will return to manage Jupiter this year.

With Jack McKeon's retirement after the 2005 season incoming coach Joe Girardi named a new staff.

The Marlins have sent Dorante to manage their Double-A Carolina affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon, N.C. The Mudcats play in the Southern League and their mascot is Muddy the Mudcat.

Gary Allen managed the Mudcats last year.

Mudcats pitching coach Scott Mitchell will return but former Hammerheads hitting coach Paul Sanagroski will join the Carolina staff.

Back in Jupiter, Edwin Rodriguez will return this spring to manage the Gulf Coast Marlins rookie league team. The Gulf Coast Marlins pitching coach Gary Buckels, hitting coach Johnny Rodriguez and trainer Rich Ramirez. Former Jupiter and Florida Marlins pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal will return as the Marlins Minor League pitching coach.

While Hall-of-Famer Gary Carter from Palm Beach Gardens will manage the Port St. Lucie Mets this year (he managed the Gulf Coast League Mets last spring), another local Hall of Famer, Mike Schmidt from Juno Beach, won't be back as manager for the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies farm team).

Carter took over the Mets from Jupiter's Tim Teufel, who managed the team for the last two seasons, going 66-68. Teufel, who managed the Mets' New York-Penn League Brooklyn team in 2003, is no longer with the organization.

Teufel, an infielder, was a Mets' teammate of Carter in 1986.

Out of pro baseball for the moment, Teufel will continue to be an assistant coach for the Jupiter Christian School baseball team this spring. Teufel's son Shawn graduated from JCS last year.

"He said he would be able to devote a lot more time this year," said JCS baseball coach Scott Loud. The Eagles began pre-season training Monday.

Teufel isn't the only pro-baseball connection for the Eagles this season. JCS has a new softball coach, Cheryl Mahler, who is the wife of former Atlanta Braves pitcher Rick Mahler.

She took over from Rick Agganis, who coach the Eagles for two seasons.

The internet is going to go nuts tomorrow.

Not surprised about Schmidt.... He was never known as a players' guy... When he was an announcer years ago for Prism (a defunct Philadelphia pay movie channel that carried Phillies games), he used to bash players on the air...
