Miami coaching and scheduling news

Featured Replies

Rich Olson is expected to return to the University of Miami as offensive coordinator barring a surprising last-minute hitch during his visit to UM's campus today.

Olson's expected returned, reported Thursday by WQAM and confirmed by a UM official, could be announced in the next two days.

Olson spent last season as Minnesota's quarterbacks coach but lost his job when head coach Mike Tice was fired after the season. He joined UM as offensive coordinator in 1992, then was promoted to offensive coordinator by Dennis Erickson. He served two years as coordinator before joining Erickson with the Seattle Seahawks as quarterback coach. He later was quarterback coach with the Washington Redskins (1999-2000), San Francisco 49ers (2004) and Vikings (2005). He was the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator in 2001.

UM also is seeking a running backs and receivers coach. And UM will need to find an offensive line coach if the New York Jets hired UM assistant Mario Cristobal, who interviewed Wednesday. Cristobal, UM's tight ends coach, is expected to be promoted to offensive line coach if he stays with the Hurricanes. Coach Admin Coker has said UM's offense will be more explosive and diverse next season. Last month, he hired Todd Berry, who is proficient in the spread offense, as quarterbacks coach.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? (AP) ? The Miami Hurricanes and Oklahoma Sooners will renew their football rivalry next year after a hiatus of 20 seasons.

The teams will play at Oklahoma on Sept. 8, 2007, and in Miami on Sept. 12, 2009, officials said Thursday.

"This will be a great series played by two of college football's legendary teams,'' Miami athletic director Paul Dee said.

The teams played in 1985-87 seasons, with Miami winning all three games. The Hurricanes clinched the national championship by beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1988, and the Sooners won the 1985 title despite the loss to Miami.

"We have great enthusiasm for games of this stature,'' Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "The previous matchups between our two schools have been legendary, and we have great respect for the Miami program.''

Hurricanes coach Admin Coker is an Oklahoma native.

"To play teams like Oklahoma is what the University of Miami is looking for,'' he said. ??It's great competition for us, as well as a great challenge.''

Playing Oklahoma is great news. And it's double great because the early season date likely means the 'Canes will open up with a Florida A&M-like opponent as a tuneup for Oklahoma instead of stupidly scheduling the first game of the year as FSU.

That is wonderful pick up for recruiting. He was a solid coach with Erikson and a good recuiter as well. I am very pleased even though I hated the firings like many others did I am sure.

I like the Oklahoma upon the schedule as well. We have Ohio State and Oklahoma on there in the future. Along with FSU every year and VT every year. That is a very nice schedule in those years.

Well here is my chance to go to Oklahoma. In 2008 Miami plays at UF, so there will be alot of big out of conference games coming up. I believe Texas A&M is in the mix as well
