Today in the Sun Sentinel Jack McKeon beckons fans to ask local politicians for help in getting us a stadium. The real problem is that we fans do not really know what help the Marlins are asking for from us fans. As an example, I a fan who lives in Boca Raton, would like to see a Stadium in Boca to be shared with Florida Atlantic University. There are several good reasons why this is a great idea. For one Florida Atlantic University is going to build a Stadium for it's Football Team pretty soon using tax money to begin with. If the Marlins used this same stadium their rent will pay back us taxpayers. This is a winning situation. Also tri-rail goes through this property. Tri-rail has plans to go up to Jupiter eventually. In addition, the stadium could be used for disaster situations when needed like they had in New Orleans. There are many other win win reasons with this location. Scripts was to be put there cause all the roads to get there are in place. The land would be free. Boca is in the middle of everything. It would be great to have University kids involved in Baseball in any case. It really belongs here.

 

 

For this the above to be accomplished perhaps us fans could get petitions signed in Palm Beach County to put on the ballot for some sort of penny tax to pay for this Stadium. Perhaps developers could; also, be taxed all over the county as this facility could be used in a disaster. But, we do not really know if the Marlins want this type of fan help so why even try. Miami seems embroiled in its own mess. I never really hear from the Marlins in the media what thet really want from us fans.

It's only a simple jump to assume they want you to contact your local politicians about building them a stadium. Dade County has funds earmarked because voters approved those funds being raised years ago. However Dade County is willing to join a in a Tri-County effort if the deal is fair. The other 2 counties really don't have the place to draw funds from as Broward is paying for BankAtlantic Center and Palm Beach for Roger Dean Stadium. The idea for a Tri-County Car Rental Tax is possible, esp. since Palm Beach could focus on it now that they lost Scripps.

The Marlins moving to FAU would be a disaster (and I work right down the street from FAU at One Boca Place!). First off, the traffic would be a nightmare! On any day Glades Road is a quagmire. For the love of God, the Muvico theatre creates a logjam at Glades, now imagine 30,000 for a baseball game!

 

Tri-Rail DOES NOT RUN THROUGH THE PROPERTY. The Tri-Rail station is at T-Rex, not FAU. Plus, we all know that you won't get people to ride public transportation in South Florida.

 

The current plans for the FAU Football Stadium consists of a partnership between developers and the university, with most of the bill being picked up by developers being able to make money off the commercial aspects of the site.

 

When did Palm Beach County lose Scripps? Last I saw, the Briger parcel is part of PBC, as is Abacoa. After outlaying $200M for Scripps, ain't no way PBC is going to dish out money for a baseball stadium on property over which the County has no jurisdiction. What goes on inside FAU is for the Board of Regents to rule over, not PBC, not the City of Boca Raton. However, traffic impacts outside of FAU is the domain of the City of Boca Raton and, trust me on this one as I have personally fought with PBC and Boca Raton over traffic concurrency. A baseball stadium WILL NOT PASS!!!!

I don't think anyone actually believes FAU is viable. Take a chill pill, calm down, and realize what the post was about. He said McKeon said to contact local officials, but he lives in Palm Beach and that was the only site even talked about by the team. Das then posted about the distance and I posted some distances to show that his point was off considering how sprawled out the Metro Area is.

 

The Tri-Rail comment was including the possibility of a shuttle bus, but FAU is as likely as snow in Florida right now. It was all a big hypothetical.

 

I made an error on Scripps, not realizing what went on there. I had heard news reports locally that the deal fell apart, it turns out that a Scripps-related biotech grant bid was withdrawn by FGCU.

Palm Beach residents should contact their state representative, because really Dade, Hialeah and the Marlins are no closer to closing the funding gap than Dade, Miami and the Marlins were prior.
