March 17, 200620 yr The Marlins may consider giving Wes Helms some playing time in left field. "I'm no Gold Glover out there, but I know the basics," Helms said. Chris Aguila iand Josh Willingham are also candidates to start, but the Marlins have been trying just about everyone there recently.
March 18, 200620 yr Center and Left Field are absolute crap shoots it seems. Every time I think someone's making a good push this spring, they slide back or someone else unexpected has a good couple of games. -Willingham looked to be a lock if he couldn't catch but it looks like now he'll be behind the plate. -Aguila was probably ahead going into the spring and most feel he can be pretty serviceable in either spot, but was a little dinged up, missed some starts, & maybe fell behind. -Abercrombie was hitting everything in sight, then had a 3 strikeout game where he fell back into bad habits and swung at everything. -Reed might have had a good shot early on for center, but didn't hit much early on, then today had a real nice game. -Wes Helms figures to get some ABs backing up at 3rd or 1st but could also play some outfield and has shown he can hit a little, particulary vs lefties. -Cepicky looked good early but hasn't had as much success or starts recently. -Stokes is still in the mix in left if he can play but hasn't gotten an opportunity yet. I have absolutely no clue how this is going to wind up. :headscratch

And this is why I shudder at him being in the everday lineup. Once pitchers get a scouting report on him, bye bye. Look at Francoeur's numbers the 2nd time through the league when they realized he'll swing at anything even remotely near the plate. And Abercrombie makes Franceour look selective.
