Josh Beckett is now 5-3, 2.27 with a 24-66 BB/K ratio since the All-Star break, grabbing the mantle of the Marlins' No. 1 starter. "Want a good bet to win 20 games next season?" asks one GM. "It's Beckett. That may not be a good home park in which to play, but it's a great place to develop young pitchers and a home-field advantage."

damn straight

There are two very interesting Korean players coming to the U.S. next season, both of whom worked out with the Marlins this spring training. Samsung Lions first baseman Seung-Yeop Lee, 27, had 50 homers and 125 RBI through Sept. 5, after winning the home run title and MVP awards each of the previous four seasons. Hyundai Unicorns outfielder Jong-Soo Shim, 28, is also coming, and had 45 homers and 122 RBI as of the Sept. 5. In spring training, then-Marlins manager Jeff Torborg said he thought both could help the club, and said, "there's no question in my mind that Shim would start for us. I love Lee, but we have another Lee (Derrek Lee) who's already a star."

totally forget about these guys....

I saw those 2 oriental guys play in spring training.

the look like some good players.

look at those #'s lee put up in Samsung damn.

Ramp, In fact are Koreans Lee and Shim booked for Jupiter next Spring? Roger Dean Stadium should be rocking.

When Lee and Shim are ready they can sign a contract with anyone?

Do we have first dibs?

What was the importance of them playing with us in spring?

Beckett will be a superstar in this league!!!

i think both of their contracts end in there offseason...

I hope they sign with us!!!

I remember reading in the spring about them. In Korea there called the Maris and Mantle of korean baseball...

they can sign with anyone

Id say the front runner is Seattle(duh) but Im sure they enjoyed their time with us too...

thats all the info i have on that

I wouldn't be surprised if these guys ended up in San Francisco, LA, Seattle, or New York, but I would be shocked if we got them!

South Florida does not have a historically large Japenese community.

There Korean :)

Not Japanese....

HOW MANY GOOD PLAYERS HAVE KORIEAN HAD IN MLB? IT SEEMS LIKE A EASY L EAGUE IF 2 GUYS HIT 50 HRS EASY SO GOOD IN IT.

there arent many Koreans in the majors right now

My bad!

I know a few Koreans, but I don't see why those dudes would want to come here.

money money money

I think we will get bonus points for the ST time.....maybe we land one out of two

They won't hit 50 HR's here, but they'll hit around 20-30 with 100 RBI, kinda like Matsui. All the Asian fields are of similar size to Hiram Bithorn, so those power numbers are distorted.

The process is already in the works :whistle

They are both 1B, correct?

If either one comes, where would they be? Starting, bench, what? I mean, what was the point in signing Conine if we get one of them?

The word is both will be opitions when this team is built for next season. Lets just say they(Marlins) have there agent number first on the speed dial. :thumbup

i think ur lying... why would marlins want a 1b or of thats a rookie? they will want alot of dinero 2. i rather spend tha cash on vald or somthin thats proven

dont mock edcanes...

he knows all(no sarcasm there)

good to hear ed

Why is this so beyond the realm of possibiity? Both Koreans were brought here to get a better look while getting some more players to practice. It was a relation-building endeavor by the front office. I am surprised that some of you are surprised by this.

As far as why do we get these guys, 50 HRs in Korea or not, that is a lot of homeruns. These guys are still young (27,28) and can learn to hit big league pitching effectively, possibly ranging anywhere from 15-30 HR with regular duty. These guys could be platooned, at 1B and in the OF. This is good for the Marlins in order to develop our international scouting scope and in providing flexibility as far as options to draw from an ever-widening talent pool. For once, Gammons actually brings up something of interest - but he probably wouldnt have been so favorable if the Marlins hadnt been winning. Another reason these guys may come here. And another reason to love our FO.
