September 10, 200322 yr Furmangator's thread on the Yanks "poor" attendance in the makeup game Monday afternoon against the Blue Jays got me thinking... How bad is it when the Yankees can't bring 9,000 fans in for a game?! Then I realized that that particular game was a last minute makeup game, it was an afternoon game, and it was the first day of school. I *guess* those could be valid excuses. THEN, I was prompted to look at overall attendance - check this out: - The Yankees currently lead the majors with an average home attendance of nearly 44,000. Not bad for a park built in the 1920's, especially considering that it has a competeing stadium just a 15 minute train ride away. - Speaking of competition for baseball fans, here are the 2002 rankings in attendance for teams with competition in the same city: Yankees 2 out of 14 - 43,323 Mets 5 out of 16 - 34,628 Cubs 7th out of 16 - 33,248 Chisox 10th out of 14 - 20,703 - Speaking of competition for baseball fans, here are the 2002 rankings in attendance for teams with competition in the same STATE: Reds 12th out of 16 - 22,911 Indians 5th out of 14 - 32,308 Astros 9th out of 16 - 31,078 Rangers 6th out of 14 - 29,042 Royals 13th out of 14 - 16,334 Cards 4th out of 16 - 37,182 DRays 14th out of 14 - 13,157 Marlins 15th out of 16 - 10,038 [thank God for the Expos, huh?] :thumbup Giants 1st out of 16 - 40,163 Dodgers 3rd out of 16 - 38,657 Your World Champion Angels 7th out of 14 - 28,464 A's 8th out of 14 - 26,788 Padres 10th out of 16 - 27,415 - It seems to me that the fans of both NY teams are pretty good at showing up, the fans of both Florida teams are pretty good at NOT showing up, and a tip of the cap goes out to Giants and Dodgers fans. - Speaking of "the pot calling the kettle black," the Yankees were knocked for having only 9,000 fans at one game by the fan of a team that AVERAGED 10,000 fans per game for the season. Weird, huh? :mischief2 - Don't get me started on Canada.
September 10, 200322 yr we are avg 14k(still pathetic) but 9,000 fans for a Yanks game is week... sorry
September 10, 200322 yr I don't think it was so much of a "knock" on Yank fans and NY as it was a shocker. We've come to expect huge crowds at Yankee Stadium and its definately an eye opener when you see they drew only 8K for a game. I beleive all the factors listed above obviously contributed to that number but still, its something we don't see very often. Furman was just trying to show that fact. I really don't think its a situation of the ever popular black kettle though.
September 10, 200322 yr 9,000..NO MATTER WHAT in new york city for "americas team" the yankees i dont care if it was Sept. 12th 2001...the yankees should get more than 9,000...no excuse
September 10, 200322 yr You may talk about how they have the highest Home Attendance but look at The Percentage of The Park used up, if Fenway was the same size as Yank, you wouldn't even nip them.
September 10, 200322 yr KETLE IS BLACK? WHAT IS THAT I have a question. Are you aware that the "Caps Lock" button on your keyboard has been on ever since you have been here? Or, are you doing it just to annoy people?
September 10, 200322 yr I have a question. Are you aware that the "Caps Lock" button on your keyboard has been on ever since you have been here? Or, are you doing it just to annoy people? lol but c'mon fishfan he was born in 1991 ( it says in his profile) give the kid a break.
September 11, 200322 yr - It seems to me that the fans of both NY teams are pretty good at showing up, the fans of both Florida teams are pretty good at NOT showing up, and a tip of the cap goes out to Giants and Dodgers fans. Tip of the cap to Dodgers fans? Dodgers fans suck! Check that, all LA fans suck save when the Raidahs were there.
September 11, 200322 yr where did I say that the Marlins have good attendance? I found it a shock that a team with great attendance only brought 8k to a game...no matter what the circumstances were. Sheesh...take some midol, and replace your tampon. Quit freakin out at stuff.
September 11, 200322 yr Author Quit freakin out at stuff. LOL I'm perfectly chill. The post simply peaked my curiosity as far as attendance is concerned in baseball - period. Last year, many New Yorkers were unable to watch Yankee games on television due to a dispute between MSG [the former carrier] and YES [the current carrier]. One of the issues to come out of the whole mess was a question of attendance. They were wondering if playing too many games on free stations [like FOX or local CBS or ABC affiliates] would cause people to stay home and watch the game rather than head out to the ball park. I knew that tv contracts had little to no impact on stadium attendance, but was curious about other factors. You would think that a bigger factor regarding attendance would be having a competing stadium in the same city. This made me wonder how Yanks-Mets [9 miles apart] or Cubs-Chisox [also 9 miles apart] affected each other. From there, I was wondering how having a closer ball park affected teams from within the same state [san Fran and Oakland play 17 miles apart, for example]. When you look at a place like Boston, the closest stadium is, of course, Yankee Stadium ? 206 miles away. For anyone living anywhere from central Connecticut as far north as Maine, Fenway Park is the closest MLB attraction. You would think that owning a market that large would pay off huge in attendance figures because you have no competition. Boston tends to draw decent crowds annually as does Seattle [over 800 miles to nearest competition ? Pac Bell!]. This makes teams like the Marlins and Drays anomalies. They play over 260 miles apart from each other and each have equal share in a large geographic area, the weather is nicer more often than in a place like New York or Massachusetts, and there are successful collegiate baseball teams in the area which ? one would think ? would make it easier to follow a particular ?homer?s? career easier. So my question is this; why isn?t there the draw in Florida that there appears to be in other parts of the country?
September 11, 200322 yr Author Juanky, Dodgers fans my suck - but they *do* show up [however briefly]. Since 1958, the Dodgers have finished top 3 in attendance 41 times including leading the league in attendance 23 times. Unless my math fails me, that means that there have only been 3 years in the 44 year history of the LA Dodgers that they failed to draw a top crowd. That's not so bad. In fact, that's the best in baseball.

You just assumed that when I said that the 8k was pitiful, that I meant that the Marlins fans were better?

In fact, that's the best in baseball. I would rather have fans that show you they don't care by not showing up then fans who pretend they do care by coming for two innings and having 0 impact on the game, except maybe distract the hitters as they walk up the turnstiles to leave in the 6th inning. And about the Marlins-DRays anomalies. Its pretty simple I think, that there is no tradidtion whatsoever. You can say hey, neither does Arizona. But there is nothing to do in Arizona or Colorado outside of sports in the summer. In Florida theres too much to do. When the tradition is built, the people will come.
September 12, 200322 yr Author Do you think LA fans just don't care? Or is it that the frigging traffic is THAT bad? I know Oakland A's and California Angels fans are pretty flighty. And they don't have as good of an excuse... [shrug] The DRays just flat out suck. There's more talent at a college baseball game than at a DRays game, so I can understand that. I also feel like Marlins fans are just starting to recover from being sold out adfter that world championship. Fielding a playoff caliber team with exciting young players has certainly helped their attendance this year. We'll see if they can ride this momentum. Arizona may have nothing to do, but Colorado rocks! Steamboat Springs, the Colorado River, world class hang gliding... The culture is limited to the Denver area, but still... I see your point.
