March 29, 200620 yr 21, actually today. Aren't you going to wish me Happy Birthday? No offense bro, but you are in the minority on a Marlin's message board if you want to make us believe that San Antonio is the best place for our Marlins. Happy birthday! I don't even remember my 21st birthday, but I'm told I had a lot more fun than I should have! But yeah, Miami is a better place for the Marlins if done properly in both locations. No doubt on that. And I'm pretty sure MLB will find some way to keep the Marlins there. Like I said, I think it's far more likely that the Spurs/McCombs/Ryans will purchase another team and move them here, with most likely targets being the A's and Twins. Might work to MLB's favor too since Puerto Rico wants more regular season games, so if a team does move here they could move part of their schedule there to satisfy Puerto Rico and reduce the lame duck sentence. Yes, but I taught in the McAllen area for 2 years a while back. Lost 7 IQ points during that period of time. That sounds about right for McAllen...
March 29, 200620 yr Author Unfortunately, the study also found that 98% of those new residents will be illegal immigrants with little money and less interest in baseball. :lol :lol Do you live in South Florida? Yes, but I taught in the McAllen area for 2 years a while back. Lost 7 IQ points during that period of time. McAllen?? Guy, that is the deep valley, do not even put San Antonio in the same sentence with McAllen. Sans Corpus and South Padri Island, the Valley is very very poor. Also, never put Harlingen or Brownsville in the same sentence as San Antonio... never! And I know you were joking with that 98% illegal comment, but just to inform you, there are almost 100,000 homes planned for San Antonio in the next 10 years, the average price for those homes is in the 200,000 - 300,000 range.
March 29, 200620 yr The study found population in the region should increase to 4.92 million by 2015 from an estimated 3.99 million this year, or 2.3 percent a year. Unfortunately, the study also found that 98% of those new residents will be illegal immigrants with little money and less interest in baseball. cheap shot and totally ignorant post. damn. March 29, 200620 yr I dont really see what actual property value or cost of living has to do with anything, in the sense that a nice big house in an urban/suburban area the price wont differientiate a whole lot. A house like that is $500K+ 75 miles outside of Chicago, so what? Apples and oranges.
March 29, 200620 yr Just kidding, lighten up. It's not like we don't have a ton in Miami. San Antonio is a fine city, just joking witht the Texas folks. you didnt pose it as a joke. I dont really see what actual property value or cost of living has to do with anything, in the sense that a nice big house in an urban/suburban area the price wont differientiate a whole lot. A house like that is $500K+ 75 miles outside of Chicago, so what? Apples and oranges. because people fail to take into consideration the actual costs involved in San Antonio as opposed to Miami I would suppose. and I'm going to be sick for agreeing to portions of what DMEXER is saying.

A house like that is $500K+ 75 miles outside of Chicago, so what? Apples and oranges. Actually, cost of living does have a part in the discussion of sports team location sites. It's all about disposable income. I know by comparing salaries and lifestyle's with a friend of mine in Miami, that I live a MUCH more comfortable life with MUCH more spendable money than she does, even though she makes like 8 or 9k more a year than me. That's money I can use to go to games. In fact, last year I spent about $500 on sports, and I'm significantly below the average salary (like about 14k a year below). Cost of living is definitely relevant, at least when given a comparison between that and average (both mean and median) personal income.

A house like that is $500K+ 75 miles outside of Chicago, so what? Apples and oranges. Those homes aren't 75 miles outside of San Antonio. I explained to Marlino that the avergae price for homes being built in San Antonio in the next ten years would be $200,000 - $300,000 because he made the joke about future growth an illegals. Point being... illegals ain't buying those homes. lol
March 29, 200620 yr The part about McAllen is true. (see another joke, or is it?) so? I dont really give a damn about McAllen. Its right on the border. There are probably many more illegals in Miami than in San Antonio. McAllen is 238 miles from San Antonio, so why McAllen is even mentioned in any discussion of San Antonio is beyond me other than being idiotic and trying to point out negatives of Texas in general.

Or something like that... Don't take the illegals thing seriously. Everyone cracks that joke when they want to dis on SA, and it's just flat not true.
March 29, 200620 yr Actually alot of illegal immigrants here in the form of migrant workers...good people, every single one of them I've seen is sporting an awesome mullet that puts Joe Dirts to shame. But thats besides the point. But even with more disposable income, people still might not go to the game. You said it yourself, there's not a big following of the Rangers and Astros, and the Missions attendance dropped(altho I can understand for reasons you stated), so is baseball really in that much demand down there?

It all depends, that is the study I'd truly like to see done. I am not worried about the size of our market, but rather the possibility of supporting a MLB team. I suspect it might be there, but I cant say anything for certain. I do know that any stadium needs to be as close to the Northeast corner of Bexar county/San Antonio as possible on I-35. The only other area I would want it would be downtown, but I'm not so certain as far as how much that would work, unless people truly are serious about re-vitalizing downtown San Antonio, which aside from new tourist traps, hasnt happened.

You said it yourself, there's not a big following of the Rangers and Astros, and the Missions attendance dropped(altho I can understand for reasons you stated), so is baseball really in that much demand down there? SA would certainly rather have NFL, that's for sure. But the attendence drop for the Missions is a weird thing. We've had minor league baseball here pretty much consecutively since 1888, and they have usually been one of the higher attendences in its league. Personally I think Austin would be better for MLB than SA (the Express drew nearly 800k last year, the first at AAA, and about 700k the last year at AA), but I do think there is enough demand that a team could be supported, IF THE TEAM WORKS FOR IT. If the team gets involved with the community like the Spurs have, they will have fans in the stands. If they just expect people to show up, they will flop. NFL wouldn't even have to work for it though.

I think a lot of the drop in attendance with the Missions also has to do with the city failing to allow the owners of the Missions to make the needed upgrades to the stadiums to bring it somewhere near the other newer parks in the Texas League. For most of this I blame the prior mayor, and I'm not sure how much they have tried to get a deal worked out the Hardberger now.

Re-vitialize? San Antonio isn't run down... lol But I get what you mean, improve on it. And don't worry, work is well underway on that. With the Pearl redevelopment, River reach (both Museum and Mission), Main Plaza proposal, etc, downtown SA is in a zone. These are going up in the east end of downtown on the other sid eof 37 near Sunset Station. These are just the tip of the iceberg in downtown residential highrise construction.

I never said it was run down Buddy. You know what areas I'm talking about, the areas where we have little to no occupancy, some of hte old office buildings specifically, the area just north of Sunset Station, near Healy Murphy, etc. I'd like to see AT&T as a more 'visible' presence in downtown San Antonio. Still unfortunate that Valero moved away from downtown, those two companies headquartered in downtown San Antonio would be amazing for the city and its 'image' Regarding the high rises, I wont believe it until seeing it, right now everything is either half finished or simply in the drawing phases. Main Plaza will get done, then you have to simply build from there, the only bad thing about a stadium in downtown San Antonio, is that I really have zero clue of where to put it realistically speaking.
March 29, 200620 yr Just asking, because of course I'm from a small farm town and St. Louis(closest city) doesnt really have anything like that... why the need for apartment high rises such as those?
March 29, 200620 yr Let's face it the people in San Antonio are just uglier than the people in South Florida. I know appearances shouldn't count but they do. I read this is a science journal. this must be stupid, irrevelant comment day.

For most of this I blame the prior mayor, and I'm not sure how much they have tried to get a deal worked out the Hardberger now. Yup. I wish they'd just go ahead and approve the 200k needed for improvements arould Wolff Stadium. I know I don't go to more games because it's just a pain to get to from my house, but I know a lot of people who have problems with the city not funding the requested improvements. The Great Turtle was just too stuck on getting MLS that very few people cared about to actually accomplish much important. And you know the City Council won't even listen to anything about the Missions until the Marlins situation is resolved. No reason to improve the Wolff if the Missions are leaving (except of course UTSA uses the field too...). I have a feeling Hardberger wouldn't go for it though. He seems to not want to spend money except for the NFL... why the need for apartment high rises such as those? Mostly because people are desiring lower commute times to work, so this gives them a place to live near the CBD. And also because the city is trying to increase density instead of expanding outwards even more because of the Edwards Aquifer. Let's face it the people in San Antonio are just uglier than the people in South Florida. I'm not so sure on that. I see many more beautiful people in SA every day than I did in my 9 days in Miami combined...
March 29, 200620 yr Not at all! When they pan the crowd do you think they want to showcase beautiful or ugly fans. Rest assured that MLB prefers Nice loooking fans. That will certainly be a small consideration in their deliberations. It's pretty sad when I think someone sounds stupid. Have you ever been to a MLB game(or any major sporting event(exclude NASCAR, too easy))? Theres ugly people everywhere.
March 29, 200620 yr You must have been in the ugly section of Miami. But I'm talking overall Grand Mean Ugly quotient comparison between the cities. Our grand mean is brought up, for example, by South Beach an area known for their models, celebrities, bikini girls, etc. You should have gone there. We were supposed to, but never made it out that way unfortunately. But overall you're right. The only thing you need to know about that is San Antonio has the HIGHEST percentage of overweight (not obese, just overweight) people in the US...
March 29, 200620 yr This is all I'm going to say about this: You don't leave one football state almost completely to saturate another football state to the point of excess with baseball. Ignoring completely the marketing ramifications, moving the Marlins to San Antonio isn't just bad business for baseball leaving Miami, it's bad for the Astros and Rangers as the market becomes saturated with a product that is second fiddle as it is in the state to football.
