Documentary Genre

Featured Replies

Alright, here's how this thing works. Later on in this post you will see the name of the movies nominated in this specific genre. They are presented in order by how many nominations they received, and then subsequently in order alphabetically when tied with the same number of votes. The number of nominations appears in parenthesis next to the movie title (with those not having a number receiving one nomination). Number of nominations was only the number of mentions the movie received in this specific genre.

Now, with that out of the way, here's the process. Simply look at the movie list and post your own list from the list of movies on the nomination list that you believe everyone, no matter what, must see. Feel free to poke fun, argue with, or ask for explanations from other users who may post lists. The point is to draw a general consensus on which movies should be viewed by everyone. If I see a movie that's getting a lot of issue over with more than one poster on each side of the debate, I'll post up a poll and have everyone speak specifically in that topic about that movie. Now, with all that out of the way, here's the list:

Documentary

Hoop Dreams (2)

Murderball (2)

Supersize Me (2)

Bowling for Columbine

Control Room

Crumb

Dogtown and Z-Boys

Fahrenheit 9/11

For All Mankind

Grizzly Man

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker?s Apocalypse

March of the Penguins

Night and Fog

Roger and Me

The Aristocrats

The Corporation

The Kids Stay In The Picture

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg

Tupac: Resurrection

When We Were Kings

Let the games begin.

From the list of nominees I have seen:

Hoop Dreams

Murderball

Supersize Me

Farenheit 9/11

March of the Penguins

The Aristocrats

In my mind, there's no question that Hoop Dreams is a must see, and it's by far the best documentary of the ones I've listed above.

I've enjoyed at least parts of all the other ones I've listed, but the only one I would confidently recommend to just about anyone is Murderball. Very good movie, but I certainly don't think it rates as a must see.

Hoop Dreams

Murderball

March of the Penguins

Murderball

The Aristocrats

I'm going to push hard for Aristocrats. Not only because I think it's hilarious, but because it's the same damn joke and it's STILL funny. It's also, on some level, about people. What can you stomach? What pushes your buttons. What's "going too far?"

I'll have to admit, I've never seen it. And I'm hesitant to push any movie I haven't seen.

You have to! Any comedian worth a damn, while there being some absent (Chappelle and Mencia and others in peoples minds) is on there. Do yourself a favor and rent it.

If you don't like it, blame me.

I honestly was pretty bored by the Aristocrats. I had to watch it in 4 sittings and it's not that long.

There were a couple classic moments in there, but to me it really was just the same joke being told over and over and over again. It was poop and incest overload.

I could see that.

And yet my favorite one was the Christopher Walken impression version of the joke with no swearing, then the South Park version, then the mime, and maybe George Carlin and Bob Saget (which were gratuitous).

I don't know, I'm not really offended by much, though. And generally I like that kind of humor (well, at least in the style of Leary, Hicks and Bruce).

For sure, the movie is worth seeing for the mime alone.

Tupac: Resurrection

Super Size Me

Right away I feel that I will catch flak for Resurrection. Honestly, it is an eye-opening documentary created in a unique way. The casual rap fan and even the non-fan would find this documentary a quality use of time, and it would certainly change the perspective of people who think all hip hop artists are about "bling bling bitches and riches."

Anybody else?

I'm guessing most people just don't like documentary films. A lot of people go to movies to escape and be entertained. And, while a lot of documentary films do that, a lot of these films deal with serious issues.

That being said, there's a reason most of these films started off in small circulation first.

Out of such an overwhelming response of 8 people, here are the preliminary results:

On the list:

Hoop Dreams (5 mentions)

Murderball (4 mentions)

On the fence:

Supersize Me (3 mentions)

March of the Penguins (3 mentions)

Fahrenheit 9/11 (2 mentions)

The Aristocrats (2 mentions)

Just squeeked in (all had one mention):

Control Room

Crumb

Dogtown and Z-Boys

For All Mankind

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

Night and Fog

The Corporation

The Kids Stay in the Picture

Tupac: Resurrection

When We Were Kings

All other movies were eliminated from discussion. If you find a movie you mentioned on either the second or third lists, feel free to make your case to see if anyone changes their mind. This one will be done tomorrow night.

Well Buckeye, if you convince a couple more people besides Mabdul to stand up for The Aristocrats by the time I get home, it'll get up on there.

Right now the list stands at Hoop Dreams, Murderball, and Supersize Me.

I refuse to.

It won't make it.

People suck.

I really am an advocate of Supersize Me... pretty anti-fast food here.

The List for Documentary:

Hoop Dreams

Murderball

Supersize Me

To the next genre.
