April 27, 200620 yr "Standing Room Only" Option Proposed for Airlines By Shawn McGinnis, KTLA News April 25, 2006, 10:15 PM PDT And you thought flying coach was already too cramped. Well, one aircraft maker has come up with a new way to squeeze even more passengers into economy class. French aircraft manufacturer Airbus is proposing a standing-room-only option for air travel. Passengers in the standing section would be placed against a padded backboard and held in place with a harness. There are no known legal barriers to vertical flight. Even the Federal Aviation Administration doesn't require that a passenger be in a sitting position for takeoffs and landings, only that the passenger be secured. With standing class, the new A380, which is designed to seat about 500 people, could carry the maximum number permitted, 853. http://ktla.trb.com/news/ktla-shawnsroflig...oll=ktla-news-1 I would personally love to see this happen, I can't stand sitting on an airplane for more than 45 minutes, whenever I fly back up north I always try and stand as much as I possibly can while in flight.
April 27, 200620 yr Interesting idea, but this would really suck on anything more than a short flight. Also, what would be done for children?
April 27, 200620 yr Author Interesting idea, but this would really suck on anything more than a short flight. Also, what would be done for children? I doubt the entire plane would be standing room only, they'd probably designate a little section in the rear with a bunch of these standing room only "backboards" and i'm sure there would be height requirements or something along those lines to be able to buy a ticket for it.
April 27, 200620 yr i didnt know most us carriers were busting at the seams that they needed to add standing room only seats to meet the demand of passengers for their flights.
April 27, 200620 yr I wonder how much cheaper it would be? I dont know if I would like it or long I could last standing up. The airbus 380 is for long haul flights, so I dont think I could handle a boston to london (7 hour flight) yet alone a New York to Singapore (18 hours!!!! they are starting this soon).
April 27, 200620 yr I miss the days when airplanes weren't buses with wings. :thumbdown When they were dangerous? :lol
