Mitre likely to miss a couple starts

Shoulder discomfort forces righty out of series opener

By David Briggs / MLB.com

PITTSBURGH -- Marlins starter Sergio Mitre likely will miss "a couple starts" after leaving Friday night's game at PNC Park with discomfort in his right shoulder, manager Joe Girardi said.

With a 2-1 count to Pirates leadoff man Jose Bautista in the bottom of the first inning, the trainer came to the mound, where it was decided that Mitre's night would be over.

"[i told him], 'I hate to take you out with a 5-0 lead, but I'm not going to risk your career for something that can maybe be cleared up in a short period of time,'" Girardi said. "It's a shame."

It is not yet known if Mitre will have an MRI performed on his right shoulder.

Mitre had experienced stiffness in his shoulder two starts ago, but it was decided that he was OK to pitch after being given two extra days of rest after his previous start.

Girardi called on left-hander Jason Vargas to replace Mitre on Friday.

This means Vargas back in the rotation I would assume...

Nolasco instead please. Of course that will make our bullpen even worst but it can't be that much more worst than it is now.

No matter what you think of Girardi, you have to admit he made THE RIGHT decision here. He is looking out for the kid.

I'd want to see Petit but I'm not sure if he's ready yet. But between Vargas and Ricky i gotta chose Ricky.

My guess is that Girardi will give Nolasco Mitre's spot if he has to be put on the DL and will call up another middle reliever. Possibly Buddy Carlyle, who has been doing pretty well for the 'Topes. Here is Carlyle's line so far this season in AAA -- (2-1, 2.35 ERA, 23 IP, 15 HA, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 18 K, 0.78 WHIP).

Since Moe might be out of the rotation soon I would like someone from the minors to take Sergio's place and replace Moe with Ricky.

If this injury is not a major one (requiring just the minimum days on the DL or sitting out a start or two) I think a more likely scenario is that Ricky takes Sergio's place in the rotation until he is healthy and then Sergio, when he can pitch again, takes Moe's place if Moe is still struggling.

If Mitre gets a short stint on the DL, I wouldn't mind seeing the Marlins give Buddy Carlyle a chance. I like the fact he has only walked 3 batters in 23 innings pitched while striking out 18 in AAA. He also got a callup with the Dodgers last season (though he didn't do very well), but at least that indicates he has some major league stuff (though I'd like to find out more about him).
