Varitek Expected to Miss 4-6 Weeks

Featured Replies

According to ESPN Radio Boston, Jason Varitek is going to miss four to six weeks with a left knee injury.

The Boston Glove's Gordon Edes said Varitek will undergo surgery for a cartilage injury in the knee. Doug Mirabelli will fill in for now, but the Red Sox may enter the market for catching help. Javy Lopez and Jason LaRue are among the available catchers likely to clear waivers.

You know how I feel on this Passion. Is Dougie a reliable everyday fill in for Varitek? Both of them haven't been putting up spectacular numbers this year.

It's going to be Ken Huckaby.

Our catching situation is going to be pretty ugly during this time. (Not that 'Tek was doing anything with the bat this year but still.)

Huckaby's going to start over Mirabelli?

No, but that is who the Red Sox called up.

I wouldn't be suprised or opposed if the Sox got Javy Lopez. I definitely don't trust 'Belli's back taking the load of the catching duties into the middle/end of September.

His .727 OPS is nothing to be giddy about but he'd easily be better than Miirabelli's bat or Huckaby's bat in the line-up will be and he's on the same level that Varitek has been this year. He asked for his release from the Orioles just yesterday so I'd be shocked if the Sox didn't contact the Orioles. It seems like a logical move.

the thing that i cant seem to answer is:

lets say they pick up a catcher like javy lopez...what do you do when JV comes back? you cant send javy or doug to AAA and i dont think javy is capable of handling the knuckle ball of wakefield. so is he just a rent for a month or two then sent off?

Olivo for Lester..

Do it

Yeah because they would clear waivers.

Jason

LaRue
