August 7, 200619 yr Where else to put him? If we put him in the infield we goin have to replace Uggla or Hanley. Although Amezaga is as good as a hitter as Hanley and he is a good defensive player unlike Hanley. :mischief2
August 7, 200619 yr that change didnt work....i say we put amezaga at CF and thats about the only change we should make for now. btw i met Amezaga after yesterdays game i went with him to a friends party. Amezaga is a defensive liability in the outfield. He may be able to handle the infield positions decently, but he looks like a little leaguer going after flyballs. I agree Amezaga is so limited in CF balls drop in front of him that any normal CF catch up to, our pitchers suffer when he is in the OF As opposed to Abercrombie who plays shallow and those that get by him turn into doubles and triples.

Our best CF is Ross.

It's that the two play the position so differently. Amezaga plays very deep and takes safe approaches, which coupled with his cluelessness about reading fly balls, has him constantly spinning in circles.

I thought, at least during the Mets series, Amezaga played very shallow. That's why that one ball went over his head (though he tried leaping for it) and he barely got back to get one on the warning track.

Hanley is the future recipient of multiple gold gloves. "El Animal de Obregon" (Amezaga) is never going to take SS away from Hanley. I love Amezaga, but it's just not going to happen. What about the horrible defense played by Hermida lately? Let's throw Amezega in RF.
August 9, 200619 yr I don't know. When I've seen him, he plays significantly further back than the opposing CFer Indeed. Amezaga played 3 steps behind Church. And Church about 2-3 steps behind where ABercrombie normally places himself.
August 9, 200619 yr Amezaga has not been that bad in CF. He has actually looked pretty decent out there. So many people expect Andruw Jones type defense from CF and that's just no realistic. Considering that he never really played out there before this season, he has looked just fine. And I'll never forget the catch he made a few weeks ago. Absolutely amazing. I am a huge fan of Amezaga. During the offseason, I didn't even think twice about his signing, but he has been huge for us. He plays solid defense wherever they put him (Rich and Tommy agree)... =).. And he's just been a sparkplug for this team...
August 9, 200619 yr At points in the offseason, people didn't even know he was on the team. We were busy constructing fake rosters with Andino (or Reese) and Helms as our backup infielders. The press would rarely mention his name in battles for the 2B and SS job.

His reads are generally bad, he gets pretty awful jumps, and he looks so out of place. Sometimes you see him make a ncie running play or hustle toward a ball, and you might think--man he's good! ... No, that just him making up for his initial misread and having to run full out to make what should be a routine play.

Atliest he catches them. :lol Beside this mis-read issue is something that doesn't take much time to get use to so he should improve quickly.
August 9, 200619 yr Dude, I played CF all my life. So I generally know when a player makes a diving catch, making up for the fact that he misjudged a ball. Yes, Amezaga sometimes hesitates to get a good read on the ball, but considering the fact that he's been an infielder all his life, I think he's done great out there. CF is not an easy position to play, much less learn during a season... as for that one diving catch he made, he got a good jump on that ball and made an amazing play... you can't take that one away from him.
