Florida Panthers and New York Rangers to play a game in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico to host first NHL game

TORONTO, Aug 10 (Reuters) - The NHL will make its first visit to the Caribbean and last year's rookie sensation Sidney Crosby and the Phoenix Coyotes will return home for pre-season games, the league said on Thursday.

The Florida Panthers and New York Rangers will make the trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico for an exhibition game on Sept. 23, marking the first time the NHL has staged a game in the tropical Caribbean.

After abandoning Winnipeg and moving to Arizona in 1996, the Phoenix Coyotes return home to the Canadian prairies on Sept. 17 to face off against Stanley Cup finalists the Edmonton Oilers.

Halifax will also be the site of a home-coming when the Pittsburgh Penguins pay a visit to Crosby's hometown for a game against the Ottawa Senators on Sept. 19.

Perhaps the most unique venue for a pre-season game will be in Truro, Nova Scotia, which will host a contest between the Montreal Canadiens and Senators on Sept. 25 after nearby Salmon River was voted "Hockeyville" in a nationwide contest.

The NHL pre-season schedule runs from Sept. 17 through Oct.1.

Darn. I'm flying down to see the folks in September, but I'll be back before this. Too bad; would've been nice to see that.

I wonder which venue they'll use -- the new Agrelot Coliseum seems the likeliest choice.

That is where they are playing.

Sounds good. Will this be televised?

It'll probably be on FSN Florida and MSG.

edit: nevermind, just saw B4P's post.

Great, Puerto Rico has always been a place for ice hockey. :plain

Well, they have to start somewhere.

Besides, it's only one game. :slap

I am wondering whether this is the first game of ice hockey ever played in Puerto Rico. I mean, it probably isn't, but I can't find any reference on Google to Puerto Rico having any ice hockey teams or interest whatsoever.

No hockey is played in PR, at any level, that I know of. Until recently, the infrastructure necessary for an ice rink (in a warm climate) simply wasn't there.

I'd say 98% of native Puerto Ricans don't care for hockey at all. Those that do, are typically younger guys who just watch a lot of ESPN and buy the games on PPV.

It's the first NHL game, not sure if it's the first ice hockey game though.
