December 17, 200718 yr 1. As most of you know, Saving Private Ryan is probably my favorite movie of all time. 2. I am also a huge fan of Full Metal Jacket. One of the most quoted war movies, I think. 3. Blackhawk Down is probably the most underrated movie in this genre. I am a huge fan. Does Gladiator count? If so, this might crack my top 5. I enjoyed Bravehart and The Patriot, but probably wouldn't have them in my top 5. I'd say Platoon and Glory are two of the most overrated films in this genre IMHO.

You should definitely give All Quiet on the Western Front a try. There's a new print out by Universal that supposedly is a step up from the previous release. The combat scenes are nothing short of spectacular. It's probably the first and the most effective anti-war film. It's definitely a film everyone should see, especially if you're a veteran like yourself. Don't get turned off by the year the movie was released (1930). It's like I've personally seen from those years. This movie looks more like it could have been made in the 40s or 50s. But then again, it couldn't. Something called WWII occurred and there is no way an anti-war film could have been made. Oh, and The Best Years of Our Lives is the best 'coming home from war' film, period.
December 17, 200718 yr You should definitely give All Quiet on the Western Front a try. I was thinking about it. I know I was utterly disappointed with the one from the 70's starring Richard 'John Boy' Thomas. In that vein, I was disappointed in Slaughterhouse Five as well. I know they are remaking AQotWF - maybe it's time to do Slaughterhouse as well? And while we are doing literary war movies, Catch-22 was so so [and I'm an Alan Arkin fan].
December 18, 200718 yr Oh, and The Best Years of Our Lives is the best 'coming home from war' film, period. I doubt it was better than The Deer Hunter.

December 18, 200718 yr i also thought that The Enemy At the Gates about the battle for Stalingrad was superb...they capture the emotion of the Russian people and the ruthlessness of the battle very well and its very close to the book...very close
