October 5, 200322 yr ANGELIC THOUGHTS Even though he now works for the San Francisco Giants, Joe Angel was as happy as anyone to see huge crowds back at Pro Player Stadium for the playoffs last week. For one thing, he remains a Weston resident with no plans to move. For another, the Voice of the Marlins from 1993-2000 enjoyed the flashbacks to '97. "I'm tickled to death the Fish are doing well," said Angel, one of the Giants' radio broadcasters. "I know how the fans felt after that '97 season, how they felt betrayed. Almost like falling in love with someone and having that person dump you right afterward. "Just like any romance. Somebody dumps on you, it's going to take a while to get over it. Maybe this is what's happening. I hope that maybe this will propel South Florida into getting a new ballpark." Angel noted the Giants nearly left for Tampa when voters kept rejecting funding for a new stadium. In the end, Giants Chairman Peter Magowan was able to tap into the Bay Area's strong corporate presence to build Pacific Bell Park with private funds. Most observers feel it's doubtful that can happen in South Florida, but the potential of a new park isn't lost on Angel. "They could have a ballpark on the water, tie it into the cruise ships," he said. "Have the people go down there, spend 2-3 days down there, take in a couple of ballgames, go to restaurants, South Beach, clubs. All this stuff you could incorporate. With a winning ball club and a retractable dome, you never know what could happen." Angel, by the way, has another year left on his Giants contract as the No. 2 announcer behind Jon Miller but has an escape clause should another club offer a promotion. If Boog Sciambi leaves for the Mets' job, as is widely speculated in the New York media, the Marlins should investigate bringing Angel back and pairing him with lead announcer Dave Van Horne.
October 5, 200322 yr I like boog, but Angel is a great guy so I would definitely like to have him back with us to broadcast with VanHorn
October 5, 200322 yr Author Boog wants to leave more than likely because he is a Mets fan and grew up as one. It would be the promotion to get him off the ground since WQAM has denied him anything past Marlins broadcasts for a while now.
October 5, 200322 yr I'm probably in the minority on this, but by 1999/2000 I couldn't stand Joe Angel anymore. His style was cute at first but it got old and predictable. He thought he was hilarious but I didn't think he was funny at all. But it's probably just me.
October 5, 200322 yr In Joe's last year, the ambitious, talented OB did not work with him. Just like Boog in Dave VH's first year. Enough of these BS ego squabbles.
October 5, 200322 yr It would be nice to see that broadcasting rotation from a few years back...Joe Angel could rotate with Len Casper between radio and TV broadcast.
October 5, 200322 yr Author No rotation needed if Joe comes back. Radio: Dave Van Horne and Joe Angel (great radio team) TV: Len Casper and Tommy Hutton (Top 5 TV team)
October 5, 200322 yr No rotation needed if Joe comes back. Radio: Dave Van Horne and Joe Angel (great radio team) TV: Len Casper and Tommy Hutton (Top 5 TV team) Great broadcasting teams. I agree. But, Rotation worked. Gave us a fresh mid-game voice and one (actually two) disciplined as a radio broadcaster. (You didn't get three pitches to the batter with no broadcast calls!)
October 5, 200322 yr If the Marlins want to give a gift to the fans... bring back Joe Angel. Anyone know the dollars involved? Let the talented, ambitious Boog go the way of the talented, ambitious Dave O'Brien. AND THE MARLINS ARE IN THE WIN COLUMN. And Joe matches up beautifully with Dave, Len and Tommy.
October 5, 200322 yr It seems that Joe Angel isn't very popular in San Fransisco...In a poll conducted by the Mercury News 75.2 percent of votes gave Angel a "Thumbs down",with his work as a Giants broadcaster....14.5 percent were indifferent while 10.3 percent gave him a "Thumbs up". Hmmmm....

Hmmmm.... That's interesting. Surprising. But, thanks. (Wonder why.)
October 5, 200322 yr Author Giants prefer Jon Miller style, not a Joe Angel style call. They think he is lame, their loss is our gain.
October 5, 200322 yr I was going to wait until after we're done playing baseball before posting a bunch of thoughts, including on Joe Angel, but since it's already been brought up, below is the EZboard link on Joe Angel. The SF fans there despise him if you believe the posters on this board. Personally, since Boog so hates the Marlins he would rather be almost anywhere than here (having applied for at least four other jobs in the last two years) I've thought for awhile that bringing back Joe Angel would be the frosting on the cake for Loria et al as they they try to reconnect with fans here in South Florida. Considering how Angel was treated by the previous owners it would be the perfect PR thing to do. BTW, here's the opening line from the initial post from the EZboard thread: "I would rather saw my own foot off w/a dull saw then listen to a game being done by Joe Angel. The guy is the worst..." October 5, 200322 yr Author Boog tried to leave for the Rockies job opened this past offseason, why does he hate it here so much i wonder.
October 5, 200322 yr You know what? I've been thinking: when the Marlins play at the Pro I either go or watch on tv and when they are on the road I watch on tv I listen to the radio for like 12 games a year Why do I care about Boog and Joe Angel!
October 5, 200322 yr Author You know what? I've been thinking: when the Marlins play at the Pro I either go or watch on tv and when they are on the road I watch on tv I listen to the radio for like 12 games a year Why do I care about Boog and Joe Angel! some of us can only listen to the 55 PAX games on the radio or on the internet and it is important.
October 5, 200322 yr Why do I care about Boog and Joe Angel! You dont have to care but there are plenty of people that dont have cable and stay glued to teh radio for the whole game (the diehard fans)... i had to listen to about 80 games on the radio this year....now i got my cable back though
