What Really Sparked The Malice At The Palace

Featured Replies

With the second anniversary of The Malice at The Palace approaching, a report obtained by The Smoking Gun finally reveals what Ron Artest said to Ben Wallace to help trigger the notorious brawl between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons. According to a Pistons official present at the November 19, 2004 game, Artest made a crude five-word suggestion to Wallace in the midst of a scrum at the game's conclusion. The fracas quickly got out of control when a Detroit fan threw a drink at Artest, who responded by jumping into the crowd with his fists flying. In a statement given to an NBA security official, Matt Dobek, Detroit's vice president of public relations, recounted what he saw from the corner of the Pistons bench. The Dobek statement, a copy of which you'll find below, was provided by the NBA to the Michigan prosecutor who investigated the brawl. Artest, who now plays for the Sacramento Kings, and Wallace, who has since decamped to the Chicago Bulls, both later copped pleas for their roles in the melee.

Had Artest not acted like a fool and layed down on the scorers table, there wouldnt have been any fighting with the fans

Ever think that if a fan hadn't have thrown beer on him there wouldn't have been a reason to go up into the crowd? I'm not condoning what he did at all but littering the court or playing surface with a beverage isn't exactly sportsmanlike. Artest should've kept his cool and the fan should've been ejected.

True, but if Artest wasnt laying there right in front of the fans like the fool he is, i dont think anything wouldve happened

I'm sure glad ESPN doesn't have an agenda.

Im pretty sure he didnt say that

And to be fair to the Worldwide Leader, they for the most part condemned what the players did (and The Sports Reporters called the players out big time the next day)

If this event never occurred, the best sports brawl in US history wouldn't have existed. I mean, the guy with the Pistons jersey and Tigers hat that got punched in the face by Jermaine O'Neal was a great moment in sports, nay, American, nay, world history.

"Suck my balls" ... that's it? Ben Wallace is a tool if he's going to let a guy who quite obviously is trying to get into his head piss him off with such a childish insult.

oh yeah. i loved every minute of the brawl

The O'Neal punch has got to be the greatest thing that has ever happened. So awesome...the guy standing up all disoriented, then Jermaine running full speed and delivering the knockout blow...it never gets old.

that's what I was thinking

After watching that again, Ben Wallace should've been suspended for the remainder of that year. Hard foul? Please. "Suck my balls"? Give me a break. Professional basketball players don't let a foul that happens almost every game and an insult a ten year old would use escalate into that.

I'd think getting whacked by 15 by a division rival played into it too.

It's a direct quote, hence I used quotations. And the guys in the studio that night defended the players like their own children, only later did the Sports Reporters, who don't have such a horrible agenda since they have other jobs, torch the players for their actions.

I remember Dwyane Wade hit a buzzer beating shot against utah that day.

I was pissed off cuz i felt that the brawl kinda took all the press away. I

saw him the very next day at sunset place and i got his autograph.

What a game, i had row 5 seats for that one and had a great view of the ball bouncing through for the win

I remember the future national champion Heels losing to Santa Clara that night, so I was glad about the brawl taking all the press away from that embarrasing loss

You can suck my balls?

That's it????!

"ill do that ron, after the game ill get on my knees and ill suck your balls.... ill suck them dry ron."
