Posted November 22, 200618 yr Vote for your choice for the most overrated government official of all time. The ten receiving the most votes will advance to the first round, while all others will be eliminated from contention. Polls will close at some point on Saturday. I'm proud of us, we got 16/43 on the list. Impressive.
November 22, 200618 yr i like how abe lincoln is siphoning off votes from abe lincoln. what a maverick.
November 22, 200618 yr With this crowd you are very likely to see Reagan, where Jefferson, Jackson and Clinton are far more qualified for the title.
November 22, 200618 yr With this crowd you are very likely to see Reagan, where Jefferson, Jackson and Clinton are far more qualified for the title. Didn't Reagan recently get chosen as the greatest American or something? So yeah, you could argue he was overrated (FYI Jefferson ranked 12th on said list, and Clinton and Jackson didn't sniff the top 25). I'd say this is a pretty good barometer for thinking someone is overrate (though that list was a freaking joke. Billy Graham was 11th, or something)

I'd say this is a pretty good barometer for thinking someone is overrate (though that list was a freaking joke. Billy Graham was 11th, or something) First, it is top American. Second, how much you like a guy you remember is not relevant. You can't rate them until at least a generation has passed. So I am going to withdraw an reference to Clinton and replace him with Kennedy.
November 23, 200618 yr This is going to come down to Liberal vs. Conservative (FDR vs. Reagan). Can Reagan really be considered a conservative? I went with FDR.
November 23, 200618 yr Reagan is widely considered to be the founder of the Conservative Movement. However, as President, he spent a ton of money throughout the eight years that he was President (not unlike our current president, although not as bad). I voted for him because I believe his status as the founder of the Conservative/Fiscally Conservative movement is incorrect. At least Clinton was somehow able to balance the federal budget, not exactly something that was very easy to accomplish.
November 27, 200618 yr This is going to come down to Liberal vs. Conservative (FDR vs. Reagan). Can Reagan really be considered a conservative? I went with FDR. Why? Because of the spending? All things considered, he's pretty much the face of the conservatives or if you will, the Republican party. Before he supported Nixon's campaign, Reagan was a democrat. He switched parties because he knew he couldn't get the democratic vote after supporting Nixon. He may be the face of the conservative party and he might have been elected as a member of the GOP but before it all, he was a democrat.

Being a member of a party does not lock you into any of their beliefs. Think Reagan would have stood much of a chance in California if he was a Republican from the getgo?
