Cubs, Marquis reportedly agree to deal

Right-hander was 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA, 96 strikeouts in 2006

CHICAGO -- The Cubs may have landed another starting pitcher in Jason Marquis.

According to multiple reports, Marquis has accepted a three-year offer from the Cubs. Marquis is coming off back-to-back losing seasons with the Cardinals, and was 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA in 2006. His best season was 2004, when he was 15-7 with a 3.71 ERA.

The news was first reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which said the deal was worth $28 million over the three years. According to the Chicago Tribune, the contract is worth $20 million.

Cubs officials were not available for comment on Saturday. General manager Jim Hendry was in Orlando, Fla., and resting after undergoing an angioplasty Wednesday night. He was not expected back in Chicago until Sunday.

Pitching has been the Cubs' top priority lately, and they did agree to terms last week with left-hander Ted Lilly, pending a physical, which was expected to be completed this week. That will take care of one spot in the rotation.

Marquis got a head start on a possible Cubs connection by meeting with pitching coach Admin Rothschild after the Cardinals' successful World Series.

"Jason called me shortly after they got done with the World Series and asked me if he could come down and throw," Rothschild told WGN Radio on Friday night. "He'd talked to [Greg] Maddux during the season and [Maddux] recommended that if he had a chance to let me see him."

Pitcher Marquis joins Cubs with 3-year deal

By Bruce Miles

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry went to the winter meetings hoping to get two starting pitchers.

Hendry worked overtime and through one health scare, but he got his pitchers. Sources confirmed this morning that the Cubs are near a three-year contract, with the final details still to be worked out, with right-hander Jason Marquis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the deal to be worth $28 million, but Cubs insiders insist that figure is too high and that the final contract is expected to be worth closer to $20 million to $21 million.

Marquis, 28, was 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals this season. He began his big-league career in 2000 with the Atlanta Braves. Lifetime, Marquis is 56-52 with a 4.55 ERA.

?He was clearly healthy, and he?s had seasons where he pitched 200 innings,? Rothschild said this morning. ?Last year wasn?t the best year for him, but he still won 14 games. He pitched deep into ballgames, so he can give you innings, which is important for us.?

How many mediocre and below average starters can the Cubs lineup in their rotation? YIKES!

They may want Mitre back to be their Ace at this rate...if they do we want Hill
