First of all, know your candidate before you make a decision: http://obama.senate.gov/

Click on the links under the heading "On the Issues." Bear in mind that you need to look for key words such as "introduced" and/or "sponsored" to find legislation that he actually worked on and/or proposed. Words like "supported" or "passed" are used to attach someone's name to another person's legislation because they simply voted for it. Just keep this in the back of your mind so you can differentiate between honest legislation and BS political filler as you read.

In other news, I would TOTALLY vote for John Edwards. I mean, the dude can talk to dead people. For his Cabinet, he could call on the spirits of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, or even Ford!

Rightly or wrongly, hell will freeze over before the American population elects a black man with such an ethnic name to the office of president.

So true.

I would describe myself as a Democrat who is very pro-death penalty/abortion rights and I would be very open minded to voting for a black president but does anyone on here really believe that he has ANY shot of getting elected?

I think he's got a shot of getting elected. All the people that wouldn't vote for him because he's black don't vote for democrats anyway. I think the independents (the swing voters) wouldn't consider his race at all.

I'm a Republican, and I can see myself voting for him

Are you implying there are more racist on the Republican party?

Yes. That's what I am implying.

Just following the "all the people that wouldnt" vote for him theory.

If you do not carry the southern states, since I assume those are "the people" you refer to, you are not going to win.

The Democrats could run the guy from your local Blockbuster and carry the west coast and New England, but that has not exactly worked out so hot...

No, that's not who I was referring to. I was referring to the extremes - people that are racist and wouldn't vote for someone who is otherwise qualified simply because he or she is black or Hispanic. Those people tend to vote Republican.

And I agree with your comment about the Southern states, but only to an extent. You don't need to win all of those states. You need to win at least one, though. In 2000 if Gore had carried a single Southern state he would have won the election. In 2004, if Kerry had won Florida he would have won the election. If he had won two of the other Southern states he would have won.

The winner just needs one or two Southern states. The question is whether Obama can win in Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri or maybe North Carolina. I think he can win in Florida, Virginia, and Missouri. Maybe Tennessee.

However, it looks like some of the mountain states may be in play for Dems. If they can pull out a win in Colorado or Arizona they can win without any Southern states.

So most racists are republicans and all independents are sound minded fair voters with absolutely no personal bias?

Yep, that makes sense.

You apparently can't read. I never said "all independents." I said racists that vote (notice that I didn't say all racists, just the ones that vote) tend to vote Republican (also notice I said tend, not always). Some racists vote Democrat and some are independent. And I never said anything about personal bias. Everyone has some personal bias.

Just for the record, I would never say "all" of whatever "always" do something. Words like "all" and "always" tend to be used by unsophisticated people that think in black and white.

That link doesn't work.

I'll wait for him to get past primaries first anyways, when it's his job to convince me to vote for him, if he gets out alive, anyways. My main point is, the guy came out of nowhere with little relative history to anybody else even rumored to be interested. I understand, everyone's sick of republicans right now, minority candidates are awesome, etc., etc. But, I wonder if this guy isn't just some snowballing media hype and if this isn't based on that stirring speech he made at the last huge democratic convention.

I'm not saying the guy isn't worth a damn, he very well could be, it's just crazy the quick rise of this guy's fame.

I've been doing some reading on Obana over the last day or so.

It seems like he has very liberal views. If he wants to win an election, he must move more towards the center.

Yeah, think Ross Perot. At one point only a few months away from the election, Perot actually was leading in the polls. It was a clear "we'll take anyone ELSE" rise. But as more people actually heard him speak, at the debates & on issues, that lead disappeared pretty quick.

I tend to think that will be the opposite with Obama, who is quite a good speaker.

It's fair to say that most racists that vote lean Republican. Of course I wasn't implying that all racists are Republican or that no Democrats are racist. It's just an overall trend.

Do you have any facts to backup this ridiculous assertion?

Boston, one of the most liberal cities in the US, is regarded by many as the most racist city in the US.

The South turned on Democrats and started voting Republicans because of civil rights, school busing, and affirmative action. Clearly those people were motivated by racial bias. They still vote Republican.

You can't have facts showing things one way or another. First of all, you'd have to define a racist. Second, you'd have to identify them. Third, you'd have to link that up with voting trends. Clearly, that's nothing you can assert factually.

But, that doesn't mean you can't come up with a reasonable conclusion. If you know American political history from 1950 forward you would conclude that, yes, most racists that vote tend to vote Republican.

Your example of Boston is irrelevent. I never said that no Democrat is racist. Obviously, there are racist Democrats, of which some, I am sure, live in Boston. If you feel your example is a good one to back up your assertion, then I can do the same thing. The South is notoriously racist. They tend to vote Republican.

The city in the news recently over racial problems is LA and LA happens to be another very liberal city. I'll bet that the overwhelming majority of those involved in the "war" who take the time to vote are most loyal voters for democrats.

I don't have time right now to look this up to confirm it but I think the minority population in the South is growing faster than in any other region of the country so if the South is full of white racists then why are so many minorities moving there?
