DAVIE ? The agent for Trent Green said Friday that the quarterback wants to play for the Dolphins in 2007 and the only roadblock is an impasse in trade talks with the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Trent would like to be there," agent Jim Steiner said. "He has a relationship with [Dolphins coach] Cam Cameron that goes back 10 years ago when both were with Washington. It's an offense he's familiar with and there would be an excellent working relationship."

The Dolphins apparently have competition for Green's services. The Kansas City Star reported that Detroit also has expressed interest in Green, and Chiefs President/General Manager Carl Peterson will meet with Dolphins General Manager Randy Mueller and Lions President Matt Millen at the annual NFL owners' meeting that starts Sunday in Phoenix.

Green also isn't the only veteran quarterback the Dolphins are eyeing. A source said the Dolphins have interest in David Carr, who was released Friday by Houston shortly after Matt Schaub was acquired in a trade with Atlanta.

The top selection of the 2002 draft, Carr and the Texans struggled through five seasons without a playoff appearance. But at 27, Carr is nine years younger than Green. It also wouldn't cost the Dolphins draft pick compensation to sign Carr.

Green, 36, was one of the AFC's top quarterbacks this decade before suffering a major concussion in the 2006 season-opener. Green missed eight games and struggled upon his return, finishing with his lowest quarterback rating (74.1) since joining the Chiefs in 2001. The Chiefs placed Green on the trading block after re-signing backup Damon Huard to a three-year contract in February.

Scheduled to earn $7.2 million in 2007, Green is unable to reach agreement on a restructured contract with the Chiefs. Green would have to accept a new deal with the Dolphins, but Steiner said that wasn't an issue.

Besides Cameron, Green also has a strong relationship with new Dolphins quarterbacks coach Terry Shea, who handled those responsibilities for five of the past six seasons in Kansas City. Green's familiarity with Cameron's system could help the offense learn the scheme more quickly while the team grooms a younger quarterback as his heir apparent.

"[Green] has had discussions with Miami, more with Miami than any other place," Peterson told the Star. "He's indicated that's certainly a place he has a great deal of interest in. All things considered, that would be a natural place for him to be."

Peterson spoke with Mueller about Green earlier this week when both attended the University of Tennessee's pro day workout.

"[Trade talks are] moving," Peterson said. But he said if a deal can't be worked out, they might keep Green -- at a lower price.

Green could control where he ultimately lands by refusing to restructure his contract, which is how Joey Harrington maneuvered a trade last year from Detroit to the Dolphins despite Cleveland having proposed a draft-day deal to the Lions.

Detroit also might be appealing to Green, as he played under Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz when both were in St. Louis in 1999 and 2000.

Should Green or Carr be added, the Dolphins could part ways with quarterback Daunte Culpepper. The Dolphins would save $1.3 million in cap space by releasing Culpepper, who is set to earn $5.6 million in 2007.

Cameron didn't shed much light on Culpepper's future with the Dolphins other than to say he is still rehabilitating his knee from a December surgery but that he should be healthy enough to participate in a mid-April minicamp. Cameron, who is doubling as the team's offensive coordinator, said Friday that he won't begin working with the team's quarterbacks in the offseason workout program until April 2.

"Whoever our quarterback winds up being, it will be a guy who has earned the job," said Cameron, who essentially declared the position open for competition.

"Everyone knows our critical issue is our quarterback's level of play no matter who the quarterback is ... In no way is it in my best interest or our organization's best interest to talk about anybody who's not on the roster."

I would prefer Carr. He is younger and has always had a good pass completion percentage. I'm glad Culpepper could be gone.

So the Dolphins are bad at the QB spot, what else is new?

I would much rather sign Carr

I think Green is better, but they wouldnt have to give anything up to sign Carr. Carr is also 9 years younger.

Yep. I think I'm with everybody else when I say I'd much, much prefer David Carr.

I don't even care anymore. Just give me a QB and I'll root for him.

I wouldn't be against signing Carr because you're not going to live up your full potential as the centerpiece of a expansion team - but Green? Why not just convince Gus Frerotte that he should come back to Miami. No thank you. By the way, NONE of those guys are a significant upgrade over Culpepper. Cutting him would be stupid.

Cool, you guys are becoming like my team.

Not sure what exactly you're referring to, but the Dolphins QB situation has pretty much been like this for years.

I'd much prefer Carr to Green because of youth--and I think that with no one having established himself last season, competition at QB could only help. But cutting Culpepper would be stupid. At least see what he looks like in camp, how much his knee has improved, etc. It's not like the season is starting tomorrow or anything.

I think maybe the dolphins are going to bring in both Carr and green and let them battle it out. But that means they will cut Pepper

Your team finally figured out that Campbell is the QB of the future and relegated it's junk to the bench...
