March 28, 200719 yr I'm trying to scan in some comics that have been professionally graded and sealed in a case. When I scan them, the images come out blurry...like this But the unsealed stuff comes out really clear, like this: I've seen plenty of scans of sealed books that are crystal clear...any ideas how to fix this? It's an HP scanner - the C3180 and I'm on a Mac...
March 28, 200719 yr By the look of the first one, it looks as if the scanner isn't able to get down low enough to capture the image. If you look at the sides of the case, it is much more clear since it is right up against it (at least the bottom part especially). Not trying to state the obvious, but just by looking at it that looks to be your problem and I don't know how you'd work around that especially if they were professionaly sealed and you don't want to break the packaging.

Get down low enough? It's a flat-bed...so I'm confused by that. Please do elaborate, over simplification is fine with me, I'm a big time novice with this. Ideally, here's how I'd like them to come out:
March 28, 200719 yr Yeah, that really wasn't very good language to use with this, lol. I'm no expert but I was thinking if the comic is lower then it's case...maybe the scanner can't read it if the case is raised too high. get a mac! and I'm on a Mac...

THat's a possibility, but truthfully, the casing isn't so thick that there'd be enough separation to cause it. Basically, I think it's the actual light from the scanner reflecting off the plastic, and my question is if there's a way to eliminate that glare...I guess... :confused get a mac! I mean, come on!
March 28, 200719 yr I doubt it is on the software end, man. Send JonDigital a PM to look at this thread...he knows his stuff.

March 28, 200719 yr I'm positive it's your scanner. Looking on google, I found a similar discussion on this topic here. One of the comic geeks astutely noted that LED-type scanners give blurry scans when you try to scan slabs, while white light-type scanners do not. To check on that, I looked up the specs for the scanners that were successfully scanning slabs, and the specs for the ones that were getting blurry scans. Sure enough, every scanner that worked is a CCD-type scanner, while every scanner that failed, including yours, is a CIS (LED source) scanner. That explains why certain HPs and Canons can do it while others can't.
March 29, 200719 yr This is the scanner's inability to focus on it. You may want to try scanning it like if it was transparency film.
