Mets Fire Rick Down, Hire Ricky Hernderson

Featured Replies

I haven't been following the situation as close as someone like you would be, but to me Ricky seems like a panic move. It doesn't seem he would make a great hitting coach at the MLB level yet.

Has he ever coached anything before? Just because you were a great hitter doesn't mean you can teach it, but what do I know?

While it's a cool story this is a joke as a franchise move.

The only person Ricky has ever cared about is Ricky, and I like it that way but that's the last type of guy you want as a coach. He'll be the one giving a curtain call now after every Met hits a homer.

I think this will be a fantastic move. Ricky actually has been working with Reyes specifically the last 2 years on base running and his patience at the plate. In fact, Reyes credits Ricky for the spike in walks/OBP this season.

Not only that, but some papers in NY are saying that Howard Johnson may be the hitting coach and Ricky may take his spot as firstbase coach.

Either way, neither player can do worse than Down and they hired a guy who has shown big results.

i wonder if rickey likes elaine?

If you're gonna make Strawberry hitting coach you have to make Gooden pitching coach.

Stay classy.

Maybe we could of signed Cabrera and payed his fat ass with donuts.

In the words of Jim Norton please feel free to roll around in a field of barbed wire with Magic Johnson

Looks like it's HOJO and not Rickey...

Mets to name Johnson hitting coach

By Tim Brown, Yahoo! Sports

July 13, 2007

Howard Johnson will be named hitting coach of the New York Mets on Friday, getting the nod over Rickey Henderson, who will coach first base, baseball sources said.

Ninth in the National League in runs after finishing third in the NL last season, the Mets fired hitting coach Rick Down during the All-Star break and interviewed Henderson in San Francisco this week.

General manager Omar Minaya decided Friday morning that Johnson, who managed and served as hitting instructor in the Mets organization before being named the parent club's first-base coach before the season, would be best suited to replace Down.

Henderson, who last played in 2003, retired with 3,055 hits, a .279 batting average and a .401 on-base percentage. Johnson batted .249 with 228 home runs in a 14-year career that ended in 1995. His best seasons came with the Mets, and he helped them to a World Series title in 1986.

There was breaking news regarding Ricky that was told yesterday on ESPN Radio:

Steve Phillips who was on that team with Ricky and Olerud denies that the story involving both of them ever happened. They were talking about how funny it would be IF that happened on a team airplane at one point during a road trip and somehow it made the rounds and became legend.
