July 28, 200719 yr From the Arizona Republic/KPNX: http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/072...crash27-ON.html The helicopters were from KTVK and KNXV. Each chopper had 2 aboard: a pilot & a reporter. 4 counts of felony murder should be added to the list of charges to the guy police were chasing, after all....police in many cities use the news helicopters to help them assess the situation from various angles.
July 28, 200719 yr That is terrible. Don't agree at all though that murder felony charges should be added to the list of charges. You could make a slight case for man slaughter, but even that is pushing it big time.

I believe the crash was near the time in the chase when the suspect rammed into a police car (or two) and was running off. That's a felony, so felony murder would be in line. Don't know exactly what goes in Arizona.
July 28, 200719 yr Author Links to video of the chase when the crash happened: http://www.kpho.com/news/13770683/detail.html WARNING: Very disturbing, including the picture of the two choppers free falling. Crash video: http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/myfox/pages/Ho...mp;pageId=1.1.1 May these 4 RIP. It's time to throw the book at these people who get chased by police and hurt others.
July 28, 200719 yr Thank God that the choppers crashed where they did, considering the number of people that could have also been hurt or killed had they impacted anywhere else in that area.

July 29, 200719 yr Terrible news. Cape, stay away from making legal statements. You really don't know what you're talking about. :thumbup
July 29, 200719 yr this happened about a big block from where I work - didn't hear or see the crash, but heard the sirens screaming bye - the one uptick is that they did fall in a park - there are some offices, apartments and a VA hospital in that immediate area - all are fourtanate to be missed definitely a sad situation - however i strongly disagree about charging the car thief with these deaths - the pilots willingly put themselves in a dangerous situation, a situation they did not need to be in - they then negligently operated their vehicles with poor communication and hit each other - it's tragic indeed, but the pilots are clearly at fault here

July 31, 200719 yr Here's a short article about fleeing a crime and the culpability a criminal may have to the harm caused during the chase. http://www.slate.com/id/2171378/
July 31, 200719 yr Author It depends on what Arizona's law is, but if it islike most states.....4 counts of felony murder could charged. I think it would be correct to do it: No chase, no helicopters, no deaths. You can blame anyone and everyone you want, but the deaths happened while the guy was committing a felony or three. What if the police helicopter had gone into a news chopper? Then what would be y'all's reaction? Most of the news choppers are flown by pilots who were once police or have good relationships with the local departments.
July 31, 200719 yr in that case it would depend on who caused the accident - i would potentially charge the newstation - just like if a news van caused an accident with a firetruck that prevented them from responding to a scene once again - a car chase doens't naturally mean news helicopters have to chase it's not like the chase caused a car to swerve out of the way and hit a pedestrian - that I would charge to the thief as he brought that result to those victims in this case the victims knowingly put themselves in a dangerous situation
