August 2, 200719 yr Former Jays catcher signs with Marlins The Marlins signed catcher Jason Phillips on Sunday and assigned him to Triple-A Albuquerque. Phillips this season appeared in 55 games for the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .208 with a homer and 12 RBI. In parts of seven big-league seasons, including his first four with the Mets, Phillips is a .248 hitter. -- Sun-Sentinel Marlins not optimistic about Johnson return? Ricky Nolasco pitched May 12 and left after five innings. There was speculation at that point Nolasco might go back on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Nolasco made one more start and has been on the DL since. Three Marlins starters -- Nolasco, Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez -- have missed most of the season with injuries. Sanchez is out for the season, and Johnson is scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., today and likely will have season-ending surgery. ''I'm not optimistic,'' Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest said of Johnson's situation. -- Miami Herald Marlins pitcher Olsen bombed since arrest Marlins pitcher Scott Olsen has allowed 13 runs and 18 hits in two starts since his arrest July 21. Asked if that has affected Olsen's pitching, Gonzalez said, "It can be a difficult situation," but said he didn't know. "We talk to him all the time ? he's not left on an island ? and not just because of what happened." -- Sun-Sentinel Former Jays catcher signs with Marlins The Marlins signed catcher Jason Phillips on Sunday and assigned him to Triple-A Albuquerque. August 2, 200719 yr We sign a former Jays catcher twice?? Seriously though, the injuries are getting ridiculous.
August 2, 200719 yr Author i think they got ridiculous a long time and we're way past that at this point. :banghead
August 2, 200719 yr Hopefully this new catcher will develop into something, just as others have when they enter the Marlins organization. Olivo needs to be replaced, Matt Treanor does OK, but we need a better catcher. Any word on De Aza?

August 2, 200719 yr Purely speculation, but if the rumors were true Olivo was shopped, Phillips may have been acquired to fill the void in Albuquerque if Baker was called up. BTW, I missed when Hoover was hurt/traded/DFA'd. Anyone know what happened? He started out hot in April and then poof!
