ASTROS FIRE PURPURA, GARNER

The Astros have fired general manager Tim Purpura and manager Phil Garner.

Tal Smith will replace Purpura while Cecil Cooper will take over from Phil Garner. The announcement was made at a press conference today at Minute Maid Park.

Astros' firings were easy decisions

These weren't tough calls. It's what comes after this that will be tough. It's finding the right people to lead the Astros in a new direction.

First things first. Cecil Cooper waited too long for this chance. He deserves it and will do well.

Now about all the rest. If this move signals a new approach by Drayton McLane, it's a day fans should rejoice. If it's simply changing names on the mast head it was a waste of time.

Tim Purpura didn't do a good job, but he never had the freedom to do his job that other general managers have. His short stay as GM may never be fairly evaluated because we never may know the conditions under which he worked. If his replacement is Tal Smith's son, Randy, it will be remembered as a bad day for the franchise. He's simply not the right guy for the job.

Firing Phil Garner will be popular with fans. He was never more than average as a manager, but Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa combined couldn't have won with this roster.

About time, what a TERRIBLE trade, Willy Taveras Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh for Jennings who has been one of the worst in the league.

Yeah, i nearly died at that. I really liked Willy T. Purpura won't be missed by me.

But Garner? He managed then to the NLCS in 04, the team's first World Series in 05, and narrowly missed going to the playoffs in 06. I know this season has been bad, but I don't agree with the firing one bit.
