Phillies @ Marlins-Friday August 31 2007

Featured Replies

Though the Marlins are 6-6 thus far in the season series, the Phillies are playing inspired ball as they are in striking distance of the Mets in the National League East. They're also in the thick of the Wild Card standings.

Florida, meanwhile, has lost 13 of 15 after dropping two of three to the Braves.

After playing 16 days in a row, the Marlins are off on Thursday.

Sergio Mitre takes the mound on Friday looking to get back on the winning track. The right-hander has had a rough August, posting an 0-2 mark and 7.22 ERA in five starts.

Mitre is up to 140 1/3 innings and 24 starts this season. The team is keeping close tabs on him, especially in light of the fact that he threw 41 innings in all of 2006 because he missed so much time with injuries.

The Phillies are starting Kyle Kendrick, who faced the Marlins on Aug. 9 at Philadelphia. In that game, won by the Marlins, Kendrick was not involved in the decision. He gave up two runs on hit hits in seven innings.

Pitching matchup

PHI: RHP Kyle Kendrick (7-3, 3.89 ERA)

Somehow, Kendrick baffles hitters without throwing particularly hard. His ball has so much movement that even his mistakes tend to become groundouts. The righty has allowed three runs or fewer in 10 of his 14 outings, and Sunday against the Padres was no exception, as he limited San Diego to one run in six frames.

FLA: RHP Sergio Mitre (5-7, 4.30 ERA)

Mitre admitted that he's feeling the effects of making a career-high 24 starts this season. On Saturday, he allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in six innings in an 11-7 loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Mitre has not won since July 29 at San Francisco. In six of his past seven starts, he has given up at least five runs.

I have to go to my fantasy football draft tonight and they won't have the game on. I just hope that you guys don't kill our season. Wouldn't you guys rather see somebody other than the Mets or Braves win the east?

BTW, the Phillies bullpen is completely shot after the Mets series. They had to recall Kane Davis for tonight's game.

ok so what happened to treanor playing more?

probably since olivo was whining they gave him the start?

fredi being compassionate fredi maybe?
