When you get serious with a woman... or are married - you need to ask her mom or dad those things. Ring, dress sizes, etc.

I have it covered.

Doesn't mean I like shopping for women's clothes though during the holiday season.

Wait a minute...Do you go by yourself to a women's store/department and pick out clothes you think she'd like?

I'm going with one of her friends and if I go on the 21st, probably my little brother as well.

But yes, I do pick out stuff I think she'd want and I'm going to get most of what is on her list.

I can't even fathom trying to pick an article of clothing that I think a woman would like. But then again, the ex set that bar high.

I did marry her.

I know a little bit about her style and tastes.

:)

No doubt, just trying to appease a woman's idea of apparel perfection is a bit overwhelming to me. Perhaps one day when this mensch gets married...

the past few years, i've bought my family a whole bunch of stuff....

but this year, i'm just going to buy them a copy of affluenza (and get a copy for myself). no real need to clutter the house with more stuff we don't really need.

i was going to buy them a coffee table and pitch in for end table and a desk from ikea to fix up the family room, but the trip didn't go well...

but i'll probably make brownies and egg nog milkshakes the night before since they don't stay around for long...

My best female friend is pretty adamant on a vibrator for Christmas. I can't say I've ever been vibrator shopping before.

Pretty sure you need to hit that.

Don't buy DVDs anymore. Dumb investment unless you think you are going to have the SD format for over another year.

My brother has a HD DVD players as well, but since I only have Blu-Ray and want to borrow two of those movies, I'm only getting him that. :lol

How anal are you about picture quality? I've seen standard DVDs upconverted into higher definition and the quality is near to that of Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD. Perhaps you're just a couple years ahead of us (in terms of mindframe and technology), but I have no intention of buying a high definition player any time soon. I will accept it as a gift though. :cool

I have a hard time watching standard DVDs now after viewing stuff like Casino Royale in 1080p on my 63" set.

I figured that.

I'm having a hard time figuring what to get my younger brother. I really want to get him a large free weight set but I think that would be too obviously saying "you should get in better shape".

Maybe I'm a shallow prick

But I would not like somebody to say "hey for christmas I made a donation in your name to ________"

Unless of course, it was the Human Fund

The CrimsonCane Drinking/Weekend Fund is another very worthwhile cause.

Donations can be sent via PayPal. Any questions can be answered via PM.

There is a difference once you put them up with one another side by side. (At least for me) My issue with it was never questions over quality difference (I thought they always existed and were quite significant) it was always about cost per DVD. I've been hesitant to make the switch because of the whole format war issue, but I've finally succombed. Being able to see Lost Season 3 in Blu-Ray glory clinched it for me. Also, older films tend to have MUCH better transfers for their Blu-Ray versions than the DVD release. I think alot of classic films had rushed DVD releases whereas companies know that when people expect HD quality, they're expecting the best quality transfers possible.

As for my holiday purchases:

Dad - $$$$ GPS navigation system (It's a gift from all of us, but I'm throwing in some.) I'm going to get him something else just from me, but I don't know what it is yet.

Last year, I got him one of those Logitech universal remotes for our home entertainment system.

Mom - No idea. Very difficult. $$$$

Last year, I got her the Complete Series of Sex and the City (Her favorite show) so that she'd have something to watch on the new TV my parents got for their bedroom.

Younger Brother - I don't say much b/c he lurks on this site occassionally, but he'll be happy. $$$

Younger Sister - No idea. $$$

Best Friends - $$

I usually get my mom a Housewarmer from Yankee Candle and leave it at that :lol

I found an outfit online, got approval from her sister, best friend, and aunt and made the purchase:

I bought her the pants, shirt, jacket, and head thingy. I also bought her a vera wang scarf and gloves. Finally, I bought her the clutch purse and put her show tickets inside.

If that doesn't make her happy, nothing will. :|

YF21, you are a man of quality.

I still haven't done one iota of Christmas shopping. All I know is that my mom wants a bunch of random kitchenware stuff. I don't know what else to get her though.

If there is one nugget of wisdom I can impart to the marlinsboard this holiday season it is this:

no matter what they say, no woman actually WANTS a practical gift for Christmas.

Giving your mom a blender is the same as your Aunt Betsie buying you socks for your 7th Christmas. Did you need em? Maybe. Would you have been way happier with Legos? Indubitably.

If you are going to purchase your mother a practical gift, you need to throw something else in with it. Flowers, candles, perfume, edible arrangements, chocolates... For my mother, it's usually jewelry. Depending on your budget, you can buy her a charm for a chain or earrings or an inexpensive gemstone set. It doesn't really matter - if it glitters, you will make her happy.

FWIW - in addition to birthstones [shows you care enough to know] amazingly enough, Tanzanite is always a huge hit.

Anyone know if there is a site that searches multiple online retailers for a product and gives a comparison of prices?

I'm using this NexTag.com right now but I don't know if its the best way to go.

You god amongst men.

Someone want to help me in how much I should reasonably spend on a decent pea coat?

I'm a little surprised someone as net-savvy as you hadn't used it previously.
