February 12, 200818 yr By DAVE CAMPBELL MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Right-hander Livan Hernandez and the Minnesota Twins agreed Tuesday to a $5 million, one-year contract that could earn him an additional $2 million in performance bonuses. The Twins are short on experience in their rotation, after trading Johan Santana and losing Carlos Silva as a free agent this winter. Hernandez will join a handful of young starting pitching candidates, including Francisco Liriano, Scott Baker, Boof Bonser, Kevin Slowey, Nick Blackburn, and Phil Humber, when batterymen have their first official spring training workout Monday at Fort Myers, Fla. Last season, Hernandez made $7 million while going 11-11 with a 4.93 ERA in 33 starts for Arizona. He pitched for the Diamondbacks in the NL championship series. Hernandez, a native of Cuba, has been quite durable over 10-plus years in the majors, logging at least 199 innings each season since 1998. As a rookie in 1997, he won a World Series with the Florida Marlins. Source: http://sports.excite.com/news/02122008/v2950.html
February 12, 200818 yr Yup, we sure were not planning on giving him that much. If healthy he'll help keep that bullpen fresh.
February 12, 200818 yr They had to sign someone to add to the rotation since they lost Santana. Come to think of it, they've lost 3 of their 5 starters from their 2007 rotation. Santana, Garza, Silva. Man, their pitching is gonna be weak. They better pray that Liriano comes back strong from his injury
February 12, 200818 yr Would've been cool to see Livan in teal again. Oh well. $5 million?? To hell with that. Livan might love Miami, but Miami no love Livan THAT much.

February 13, 200818 yr I would rather have paid Livan the 5 million than waste 2.5 (correct me if this number is wrong) on that soft-tossing peice of crap.

They better pray that Liriano comes back strong from his injury Liriano, Hernandez, Bonser, Slowey, Humber may turn into a pretty interesting rotation. If Liriano can come back anywhere close to his 06 form... I love Slowey, i think he can be an ace. I like Bonser if he can decrease his walk rate; and Humber is projected to be a good 4/5 in the rotation. It might not be an elite rotation but it has some potential to perform half way decent in 08.
