Why should we be interested in anybody's scraps? It's always the same thing, "So and so just got waived. Let's bring him in for a look." Why? If he's someone who couldn't crack the line-up elsewhere, then what good will he be for the team here? It's not as if teams let go of guys in their prime, "Hey, look at that Vlad Guerrero just got waived by the Angels, let's bring him in to kick the tires!"

 

Puh-lease!

his biggest problem has been the long ball...and he's been playing in parks that give up more than average HRs.

 

Playing here would certainly help his numbers, but they'd still be pretty bad.

 

And he's not exactly an inning eater, at an average of 5.1 inn per start over his career.

 

I wouldn't be pissed if we got him but it's also not a move we need to make.

The reason I ask is because as much as I like our young pitching, I think we need another veteran innings eater around. In my opinion, right now we have two middle of the rotation guys (Hendrickson and Olsen) at the top. Then we have a collection of back end guys that our filling out the middle and back end spots. Plus, they are young and you never know how they will hold up with injuries and consistency. I'm not suggesting Vargas is great or top of the rotation material, but he can add some stability. We'll see, like I said, I don't like his price tag right now. In the end, I don't think this happens.

The fact we're just learning about this now doesn't mean he hasn't been scouted for weeks and with no takers (although that could be a function of his contract, it's one thing to pay $3.6 million for him it's quite another to commit $380k).

 

I don't, right this minute, see what's to be gained by signing him if you're talking about him taking a place in the ML rotation.

If it could be done on the cheap why not? He has had stretches were he looked good, plus he was a farmhand of ours, again only if he costs next to nothing.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it had to do a lot with his contract.

 

As sad as it is, a high 4/low 5 ERA guy is still useful to a lot of clubs...just not at 3.6m. And like I said about HRs...if he manges to sign somewhere with a big ballpark, he could be a useful #5, could drop his ERA to the mid-4's.

There does appear to be this widening gulf among player salaries and put aside Vargas or his ability for a minute at some point in your career you either sign the BIG DEAL and make $10 million + for X years or your value starts to go down even in a rising market, in part I suspect because the top tier of players are capturing so much of the payroll pot and at the other end of the spectrum you have first and second year players knawing at your heels at the bottom of pay scale. So the "good" ballplayer in the middle gets squeezed.

If they can get him for cheap no reason not to try. At least a few rounds either as SP or maybe a LRP. It's not like we couldn't also release him later, not like we are expecting to win the division, and not like we have an over-abundance of durable talent to take the mound. Anything we can do to give the young arms work while still not overworking them into a year or two on the DL, we should do.
