July 26, 200818 yr From Berardino's story about the 0-2 single off the debuting rookie Samardzija's 98 mph fastball yesterday: "I was just trying to see what he's got," Ramirez said. "When I saw the fastball, the slider, I said, 'That's enough'" Ho, hum, just another day at the office. Gotta like his attitude, he's got the confidence of a guy who's been around 10+ years.
July 26, 200818 yr Author LMAO, Hanley owns. Hanley>everyone else Yup. Loria is no dummy. He didn't commit to $70 mill for no extremely good reason. Remember his first game in Houston? His error on his first chance? That was the last time I've seen the guy nervous. Ramirez has that rare quality that I always looked for when hiring people, but almost never found: "I can do what you need done, period. I'm a winner and I can prove it immediately." And so he did. His comment says it all. He's a winner and he knows it. When you watch him being interviewed you don't get the usual "You know?" in every other sentence out of his mouth, unlike 99% of empty-headed ballplayers, even though English isn't his first language. He actually has something going on in his mind and can express it cogently. He's extraordinary. Add his intelligence to his 5 tools on the diamond and you have the core of a ballclub for long time. Even though it has been speculated here that his $70 mill contract makes him trade bait for the Yankees (or whomever) because the number is so low for so much talent for so long, there's no way Loria trades him. Ever. That's because Loria has essentially made him his long-term partner. Which is also why Loria isn't likely to dish out the big long-term bucks to anyone without Hanley-like qualities.
